Chris Merrill Interviews Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastellum: KOGO at Night--San Diego Radio KOGO 600

So the guy that does my hair lives in TJ.

Who will do my hair?

While this situation may not be an emergency the threat of closing the border by our so called president donald trump does create an emergency for many of the residents and workers of San Diego.

Many folks live on the other side of the border because the rent is cheaper and more affordable for their personal budget.

Many people go to Tijuana or Ensenada on a regular basis because their family is there.

My dog walker's father goes over to Mexico every week because he sees his family and friends and eats dinner.

donald's amazing lack of sensitivity is hurtful.

Chris Merrill, one of the most refreshing voices on KOGO Radio 600 AM in San Diego will always talk about the situation without ridicule.

We will not always agree on the issues but when the problem is talked about, discussed without anger, both sides given we get a new perspective.  The learn the positive and negative points--what is fueling the outrage.

Listen to Chris Merrill chat with the Mayor of Tijuana, Juan Manuel Gastellum, and hear his view on the possible closure of the San Ysidro Border Crossing, the largest border crossing in the country:

https://www.iheart.com/podcast/139-kogo-at-night-28149809/episode/chris-merrill-trump-visits-border-30797541/

Thanks, Chris , for your thoughtful interview.

Well done!

Question:

Does donald trump even care about the problems that are created in the lives of the residents and the citizens of our country by closing the border or threatening to close the border?

Voice of Merrill Daughter, Sierra Interviews Joe Nelson of SanDiegoRadio.org

SanDiegoRadio is Interviewed

By Joe Nelson
I have interviewed many people in the radio and TV industry over the years. Tuesday I was on the other side
for the first time.

By now I think everyone knows for the last year my daughter & I have been living with Iheart's Chris Merrill
and his wife, "Mrs. Voice of Merrill" LuAnn. Also their daughter Sierra and dog Dutch as well as newcomer
Milli the puppy.

Sierra is a senior and was to interview someone 'with a passion'. She came to me and of course I had to accept.

At the end of July we will be moving our separate ways but this has easily been one of the most enjoyable years
of my life, not to mention how much confidence my daughter Katie has gained through the guidance and
mentoring the Merrills have provided. This is a GREAT family!

(Chris can now be heard on KFYI in Phoenix via the Iheart app Mon-Fri)

And now, the interview:

Show Me the Passion

Joe Nelson is the Editor-in-Chief of SanDiegoRadio.org. He is someone that I look up to
because he is so passionate about everything he does, especially radio. Joe has been a close
family friend for almost five years now, so really he is more family than a friend. Being
editor-in-chief Joe has several responsibilities; photographing, interviewing, writing and
researching. He has been working on SanDiegoRadio.org for five years, it was his experience
and opportunities to get involved in radio that got him involved and kept him interested
ever since. Joe puts in at least 20 hours into his work every week, but that isn’t much
considering how much he enjoys what he does. Meeting people, socializing, and everything
that he learns on a daily basis are some of the things he enjoys the most.

Joe says; “People have jobs and careers, but when you truly find something that touches you
deeply it becomes a passion and not a job.” He is thankful that he has found his passion in
his life. Even if he won a $100 million lottery, he would continue doing what he is doing
because it has been his passion for many years. In the past Joe saw himself as a baseball
player but he knew he had a knack for writing and radio so he made something out of it.
There are very few things that Joe does not enjoy about his job. But there are challenges
and lessons to be learned from every career. Joe occasionally receives information about
a person's’ fate, such as if they are going to lose their job, even before they are aware.
He has to make the difficult decision to either keep this information to himself or publishing
it for fear of hurting other people. Besides that Joe loves what he does, he hopes to continue
this career because of how rewarding it is.

There have been many people in Joe’s life that have inspired him.

Firstly Jim Ladds’ book, Radio Waves has inspired his life he carries this book with him
almost everywhere. His daughter also plays a huge role inspiring and helping move forward
his career. She has been there from the start, she is always a huge help and it has produced
some great father-daughter bonding time. Joe has met a lot of people from his career,
people who have become life-long friends. People such as Shotgun Tom Kelly and Dave Rickards.

Meeting these people have been the highlight of Joe’s career. Growing up Joe's role models
were his parents, as he got older everyone he met and worked with in his job became
important role models because of the positive influence they had in his life. Now everyone
that is in local radio or TV are his role models because of the close relationships that
he has made with them and the impact they have had on his radio career.

Joe is the only mediawriter in San Diego. He has created something that is entirely his own
and the impact is great on the community because it is his own voice. Joes’ advice to a
high school student preparing for the future? “If you find your passion, go at it 100% and
your heart will always thank you.”

-It's not surprising that she is wearing swim goggles or that there is an Amazon box on the porch.

That's the crazy we love with, and love-

Joe Enjoys long walks on the beach, Disneyland, and mexican food.

You can find him frequently at Cafe Coyote in Old Town. If Joe wasn’t doing radio
he would be building sets for Hollywood movies. And if he were a dog, he would be
the president's dog so he could protect the leader of this great nation.

................................................................................................

Love this story as I am passionate about radio, as well.  It is nice that there is a blog about San Diego Radio.  So outraged, in the past, by some things that were said on the radio here in San Diego in the morning.  Not believing the words going over the air waves for everyone's consumption this blog lady was forced to write about it--even starting their own blog.

Here is the crazy thing about the radio......

Unless it is Dr. Laura or Rush Limbaugh it seems like the radio personality is preaching to the choir.  In other words, no matter what they say and how obnoxious it is, no one cares.  It that because of ratings, or what?

Still have not quite figured it out but unless major sponsors are backing out of the deal, as in the case of Dr. Laura and Motel 6 re: her racist comments, the folks on the radio can get away with anything.

Right or wrong?  What do you think?

There is really not any blog or Internet newspaper that pertains to local radio that I could find and I looked extensively at one time.

Well, still do not completely understand what actually makes the radio tick--particularly local talk radio.

So one day at the dog park in a conversation with a local radio personality one tried to work these points into the conversation.  It was said that it was only entertainment, not really a call in talk show as touted, and one could simply change the station or turn the radio off if they were offended.  Really....not to this blog person.

Diego

You had said earlier that you no longer wanted to have comments as your interest was not other people's opinion in writing your blog, but personally, We are lucky to have your blog even though it is more geared to jobs as opposed to one's opinions about certain shows.

But where does one talk about a show if they have an idea or different view or a complaint.  Does anyone actually care about local right wing talk radio--does anyone really listen to it with a different view?

Love Merrill and miss listening to him in the evening but I like Ernie Brown, also.
Baby owls at the Grape St dog Park

Ladona and Ted Garcia are the best incarnation of KOGO's morning drive and they also have great interviews.

Thank you for your good information.

Chloelouise, The Ronnie Republic

If you do not mind I will put your interview in my blog because I like to write about San Diego Radio, also.

Yes, I love to write about food, too.
Have you tried Desert Donuts in Phoenix--It is worth the trip.

True Detective Recommended by Kevin Finnerty and Chris Merrill on KOGO 600 AM Radio San Diego......

True Detective is Back Tonight! Here's Everything You Need To Know About Season 2

HBO, True Detective
HBO, True DetectiveHBO
Finally, after what feels like years, the flat circle that is time has brought us to another season of HBO's current grittiest drama that does not involve dragons.
Gone is the interrogation room framing device, along with the bromantic duo that is Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, so in some aspects, it's a totally different show. However, strangely, even though everything is different, it all still feels comfortably the same.
Season two of True Detective takes place in Los Angeles, where three detectives are tasked with investigating the murder of a city manager. Rachel McAdams plays Antigone Bezzerides, a tough detective with a screwed up family and a somewhat surprising backstory, while Colin Farrell plays her partner Ray Velcoro, another tough detective with a screwed up family, along with a screwed up sense of how to work out his problems.
Tim Riggins, meanwhile, just wants to ride his bike.
Sorry. Taylor Kitsch, of Friday Night Lights fame, plays Paul Woodrugh, a California highway patrolman who would always rather be patrolling those highways on his motorcycle than be literally anywhere else.
Together, they're attempting to find the killer of the guy who was supposed to be helping businessman Vince Vaughn (this season's main philosophizer so far) close a very expensive land development deal.
One of the biggest changes already this season is just in the number of characters. Season one was all about Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Harrelson), but season two definitely has more of an ensemble feel. There's even a woman in a lead role, working hard to fight sexism and prostitution all at the same time, and McAdams totally kills it. (Seriously, one time she punched us in the face. It wasawesome.)

In fact, all of the acting is exactly as great as you might have expected it to be, given that this is HBO and an A-list cast.
"It's different, the second season, for sure," Colin Farrell told E! News earlier this month. "There's a similarity and a certain tone that the piece has that I think resonated with me as having a tone that was reflective of the tone of the first year and a sensibility that's the same. But the characters are very different, the aesthetic is very different, the pace is very different."
What's not different, however, is that feeling of never wanting to leave your house again after you watch an episode because you're now convinced the whole world is depressing and terrible and that you might get murdered, which is clearly a thing that HBO is going for lately with that Game of Thrones finale (still. not. over. it.). Nobody's really in a good mood at any time on this show, but perhaps that's all a clever strategy to keep you from getting off of your couch so you'll just keep watching TV all day, and if that's the case, it's totally working.
True Detective season two premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on HBO.

from the ronnie republic radio round-up:

Always listening to the radio.........
Seriously, sometimes there is nothing on television and I would rather listen to the radio and sew.

KOGO 600 is always on in my sewing room and one off  the best  shows is Merrill at Night and Kevin Finnerty from Showbiz  Junkies.

Kevin and Merrill are suggesting True Detective.....okay there  has to be a  few  good shows out there  besides the news and  PBS.
A fan of Blacklist and James Spader but the fiction of the thing is  hard to take at times.......Kevin says he is  waiting for the return of True Detective as  it shows a  more realistic side of the police force in LA.
Sounds good to me, Kevin, I  am going to take your advice and give it a  try.

Thanks for your tip--well done and keep  up  the good work.
Kevin Finnerty can be heard on KOGO from 7-9PM each evening with Chris Merrill and he also has  the website ShowBiz Junkies for plenty of TV and movie reviews.

from the ronnie republic radio round-up: Carl DeMaio and Sully--News/Talk Radio--KOGO 600 AM San Diego

Carl DeMaio likes cats

Chloe Louise

Long time KOGO listener and Sully fan for a very long time.............

Sully, Merrill, Kevin Finnerty...........they make news/talk radio enjoyable in San Diego........Sully's conversations re:  the individuals without permanent housing in San Diego is admirable........former mayoral candidate, Carl De Maio is a brilliant addition to the afternoon line-up.

KOGO and the San Diego listeners are lucky to have his opinion on local and national political topics.

Carl....love your radio show on KOGO 600 and listen to it whenever I can.

While I am a dem and disagree with many of your policies I still always want to hear both sides and you present your case very well without anger and bashing.

By the time you and Sully are finished discussing an issue I feel well informed.

I really like getting to know you on the radio and you have so much to offer about San Diego politics and that kind of information is always interesting and valuable.

Well done on not just being a one dimensional angry Republican.

Seriously, the GOP can use more people like you and less like Bill O'Reilly.......good job.......always listening to the radio.....chloelouise from the ronnie republic.

What a low blow to this radio listener........I love Chris Merrill.........his show is good, funny, entertaining and newsworthy--not to mention he includes all different kinds of views from his gang--they seem to get along so well.

I knew something was up when Lynda Martin disappeared without any explanation.

Chris please.....I'm not listening to Rick Roberts in OKC!
