Following Soledad O'Brien to Al Jazeera America--A Good Combination

Hello,

From day one, we’ve been promising that we are putting together a team of the best journalists and producers in the field. Today we’re happy to announce an exciting new addition to our already stellar team.

Soledad O’Brien, one of the most distinguished journalists in the field, has signed on to be a special correspondent for Al Jazeera America’s daily prime-time current affairs magazine program “America Tonight.” In addition, her production company, Starfish Media Group, will produce a series of hour-long documentary specials for the channel.

O’Brien most recently served as an anchor and a special correspondent for CNN, where she was the co-anchor of CNN’s flagship morning program, “American Morning,” and the anchor of “Starting Point With Soledad O’Brien.”

Her résumé is outstanding. O’Brien won her first Emmy Award in 2011 for Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story – Long Form, for her story “Crisis in Haiti.” She was also a member of the teams that earned CNN a George Foster Peabody Award for coverage of the British Petroleum oil spill and Katrina coverage and an Alfred I. duPont Award for coverage of the Southeast Asia tsunami. The National Association of Black Journalists named O’Brien its Journalist of the Year in 2010, and Edward R. Murrow Awards recognized her with the RTDNA/UNITY Award in 2010 for her story “Latino in America.” And the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute honored O’Brien with the 2009 Medallion of Excellence for Leadership and Community Service Award.

We couldn’t be more thrilled. O’Brien — whose career has focused on producing and reporting on the human side of many of the most important stories of the past decade — will fit in perfectly with what Al Jazeera America will be covering every day.
