Shout Out to Chula Vista VFW Post 2111 and The Veterans Home: Thank You For A Lovely Birthday Celebration for Frances B and the 103

Shout Out to Chula Vista VFW Post 2111 and The Veterans Home:  Thank You For A Lovely Birthday Celebration for Frances B and the 103

It was a worrisome situation from the beginning--how to celebrate a special birthday--the 103.

They are always announcing on the history television shows that there are really not too many World  War 2 veterans left and this special lady was getting ready to celebrate her 103rd.

Yes, that would be France B who served in the WAVES from 1943-1945.

She was stationed in Hawaii when the commanding officer issued the words, "Pack up your papers and finish your work, the war is over, we are going home!"

She often tells the story of joining the WAVES after hearing the radio announcement on a daily basis asking--What are you doing to help the United States in the war effort.

After training in New York and Oklahoma most of her time was spent in Hawaii.

So many benefits have been realized for Frances from her military service with her stay at the Veterans Homes in Chula Vista being just about the best.

While her care is always top notch and the food and the facility is wonderful the birthday celebration they helped us organize was very appreciated.

One can easily guess that even though it was a very important day not too many of her relatives or contemporaries were available to participate in the celebration.

We had a cake in the cafeteria and shared our happiness with all the available residents and workers that wanted to join in and we felt so lucky that so many folks participated.

They provided decorations by Shannon and very good suggestions on where to be and set up for pictures and gorgeous flowers from Mr. and Mrs. Hank Schanstra.

As a special treat we had a visit from a representative from the VFW Post 2111 in Chula Vista proudly attired in his Navy uniform.  Wow!  That was so nice and so impressive--the Navy and the VFW was really so kind and thoughtful in regards to my mother.

We always love a man in uniform--it lends a certain importance to the day.

Shannon also organized picture taking from photographer, Les Brigham,  at The Veterans Home.

Seriously, I cannot thank everyone enough for making this day so memorable for my mother and her family.

It was important to us and her, but honestly, we really did not know how to go about it or who to include--there were not too many folks to include.

Thank you to everyone at the VFW of Chula Vista and the Veterans Home for celebrating with us and for helping us and for your very good ideas.

Thank you for taking time to include my mother and her 103rd in your day.

Frances lived most of her life in the North Park area of San Diego, a native attending Wodrow Wilson jr. high School and also in the first graduating class of Herbert Hoover high School of 1935

They always spent a lot of time on family outings to the mountains and to Orange, Ca, to visit her grandmother but mother always says it was a long ride in the back of the car.

Mother and her cousins at their house on Utah St.  This is the 2nd house from the corner of Upas about 1918.

Two beautiful girls in the rose garden at the VA home in San Diego.
Thank you to everyone for our wonderful day.

Buying Produce in North Park San Diego

Chatting about carrots at Smart and Final on Mississippi and University Ave in North Park, San Diego:

Where is your go to produce place?

Someone complained the bagged baby carrots were soggy and indescribably odd.

Exact same carrot story. I was quite annoyed since I pass through there several times a week on my way home from the dog park. The milk is more fresh than Vons, it is cheaper and the lines are shorter. Sometimes I make my own yogurt so I like to be able to count on fresh milk. The manager in the checkout told me it was an issue of the veg watering system spraying too much water and then the water really does not drain but sits there and the issue is created. I have noticed they have not changed anything even though they said it would be addressed. The other issue is green beans--old green beans in the loose bin--wrinkled and still expensive. One gets the impression that most people buy vegetables in packages . They can have some really good prices and I love their biscotti from their bakery. Check out North Park Produce on Wilson and El Cajon Blvd. Yes, one has to look at the items but not really more than S and F. Their deli rice is delicious and their olives, feta cheese and hummus are wonderful. For instance, their red, yellow, orange and green peppers are a very inexpensive price and pomegranates are inexpensive, also. One does have to look at the fruit getting a pom with a bad spot but at the end of the day it is one of my favorite places.

The bread and the candy are lovely, too.

I think John McLaughlin would love the new group, too.  What do you think?

I am always trying to tell everyone about Diana George Babish and her dog and cat shelter near Bethlehem in Palestine.

The cool thing is that there are many folks working together to bridge the political and physical gaps to find homes for these animals.

Will you please consider helping Diana by just telling everyone about her place or maybe even a donation--or if you have any tips on sharing or possible donors who may be interested in this very worthy cause.

I visited Palestine and ended up falling in love with the place but I could not help but noticing so many stray dogs all over the place.

Thank you for reading and here is a little bit about Diana from her facebook page......just google Diana George Babish.

My dear animal-loving friends: Diana will be here tomorrow for adoption day. I have a few donations for her already. If you’d like to donate food, supplies oe cash, please contact me and I will make sure she gets your donated goods or cash. Please remember that no donation is too small 🙏🏻 100 Shekels buys Diana’s fur babies 20kgs or dog/cat food. Please note that you can also donate directly to clinics where Diana takes the fur babies for treatment. Please get in touch with me directly and I will provide you with information.

San Diego Arab Film Festival to Screen
The Tower at Special Fall Screening on November 2, 2019

On November 2, the San Diego Arab Film Festival will present a special screening of The Tower, a beautifully animated film that tells the story of Wardi, a young Palestinian girl who lives with her family in the Lebanese refugee camp where she was born. Her beloved great-grandfather, Sidi, was one of the first people to settle in the camp after being exiled from his home and homeland, Palestine, in 1948. When Sidi gives Wardi the key to his old house back in the Galilee, she fears he may have lost hope of someday returning home. As she searches for Sidi’s lost hope around the camp, she collects her family’s testimonies, from one generation to the next. An uplifting film that captures the story of Palestine through four generations.
Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Mats Grorund, the film took 8 years to make and is based on his experience of living for a year in the Burj el Barajneh refugee camp near Beirut where he taught English and animation.  To see photos of set design and construction, click here.
Note to Parents: The Chicago International Children’s Film Festival recommends this film for ages 15 and up, noting issues regarding language, mature themes and violence.
A complete Palestinian meal will be available before the film.  The meal will include vegetarian and meat option plus dessert, water, coffee and tea.  Film admission price is $15 general and $10 student.  Dinner is $12 if purchased on line, $15 at the door.

Another happy ending for a very sweet dog " ANGELO" ...Thank You Diana George Babish for Making The World a Better Place

ARABIC BELOW

Another happy ending for a very sweet dog " ANGELO" .
Angelo made it to Canada , yet he is five months , he had a long trip started with pain and abuse , but he had a happy ending. Angelo with three of his siblings were found in a cardboard box near the shelter four months ago. All had severe skin problems, the two females died but the males survived Tobby and Angelo. Angelo had another additional problem, people had cut part of his leg and burnt his stomach when he was less than a month. He got the necessary treatment and was fostered first by Samar Nashash, then Leonie Bannoura, and Kaie who gave him all the attention needed for 3 months.

Now he is in a foster home in Canada with our friend Ari who adopted one of our dogs " Gus " till his new family will take him to their house. We thank all the fosters who cared for him, Miss Michelle Boles who volunteered to take him with her to Canada, and all our volunteers who helped to make this happens. Pls save a soul by supporting our doggies

Beating of teenage Syrian refugee being investigated as a hate crime

Beating of teenage Syrian refugee being investigated as a hate crime

Attack comes week after man arrested on suspicion of shoving women in hijabs, allegedly telling them to ‘go back to your country’

A 17-year-old Syrian refugee was attacked on a trolley in San Diego on Tuesday, and police are investigating the beating as a hate crime, officials said.
The teen was returning home from school around 3 p.m. when a man approached and asked if the boy was Mexican. After the victim explained that he was Arab, the man “violently” attacked the teen while making anti-Arab and Islamophobic statements, authorities said.
The teen told officials with the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans — which promotes fair treatment of refugees — that there were people nearby, but no one intervened. He suffered an injury to his face and eye.
The assailant was in his 20s, had a goatee and was wearing a gray shirt and black shorts. He was last seen getting off the trolley at the 62nd Street station in the community of Encanto.
“All children, of any ethnicity or faith, should be safe when traveling on San Diego’s public transportation. The Islamophobic and hate-filled rhetoric used against this child is unacceptable, and is, unfortunately not surprising given the rising tide of hate-based crimes in San Diego County,” said Geneviéve Jones-Wright, PANA’s legal director.
Members of the organization, who helped the teen file a police report, added that officers initially said the incident would be investigated as a gang crime, not a hate crime.
San Diego police Sgt. Matthew Botkin didn’t know exactly what was said when the crime was reported, but said the case was “immediately recognized” as a hate crime and a detective has been assigned to the case. Botkin also said the incident was never shared with the department’s gang unit, and no references to gangs or gang activity were included in the report.
The incident happened about a week after a man was arrested on suspicion of shoving and berating three women wearing hijabs, allegedly telling them to “go back to your country.”
The suspect in that case was booked into county jail on suspicion of battery, violating civil rights with force or threats and possessing a firearm silencer.

مشترياتي للشتوية ٢٠١٩/winter haul 2019 Beautiful Hannah

Trying to show the other Palestine, the one we never see on the news featuring the beautiful Hannah Zaid.

#LovePalestine

Just wanted to tell everyone about the animal shelter of another beautiful lady Diana George Babish and her very lovely dogs that she rescues in Beit Sahour.

I have a donation button on my facebook page to benefit her dog and cat shelter.  She works very hard to find homes for dogs she finds on the streets of Bethlehem and the surrounding areas.  She provides food and housing and medical care, microchips, papers for traveling and crates for the plane ride.

The issue is finding homes for these lovely animals due to physical and political isolation.  If you would like to make a donation that would be wonderful or if you would just like to share the info that would be fabulous, also.

If you have any tips on sharing or other good ideas please let me know.

Thank you for reading.
