Noam Laden and Geraldo Rivera: Talking About Race in America

No it has to be  said.......Noam and Geraldo held interesting discussions all week talking about race in America......what are the reasons for inner city poverty and what about stop and frisk.

Well, Geraldo has made it  very clear that he would like to reinstate stop and frisk...it is safer for everyone involved---on all sides of the issue and it is better for commerce in New York city giving the example of increased theatre sales and tourism this summer.

This blog writer  tends to agree with Noam Laden--yes, there  are problems right now but is stop and frisk fair?  Noam has given the example of the caller who said he is a business owner but never the less, he has been thrown up against the wall by police officers and treated in an unkind manner simply because of his color or the way he was dressed.  This  fellow owns a  bail bond business.

It seems  there is  a much larger problem and one can remember  John Edwards  when he said there were two Americas.

We have to give credit to Geraldo Rivera and Noam Laden for discussing the issue and disagreeing on the main premise......they both do want fair treatment for everyone  but again, stop and frisk is at the crux of the issue.

Noam and Geraldo are not afraid to listen to the callers.  Geraldo's  show can always be credited with actually being a "talk" show--one of the few out there that can wear the title of news/talk with honesty.  Geraldo is not afraid for anyone to disagree with him.....everyone from the big political talkers to the angry grandmas to the police department...they are all going to call up  and tell Geraldo what they think.

Noam Laden said this  morning that he enjoyed reading the recent book of former police commissioner Bernie Kerik.  Bernie is a friend of Geraldo and Noam and a friend of the show.  Bernie also has the gift of putting a human emotion on the face of the police officers.    It is so easy to say all of the cops out there are only good or bad.

thanks, Bernie for reminding us that the hard working police officers are human beings with families.

Noam said that  Bernie has  also reminded us in his  book that once someone is in prison there is no rehabilitation coming out.  One is just left out there on their own to fend for themselves without any kind of training whatsoever.

I can only refer to my friend in Wichita in the lower income part of town.  He  recently got out of prison and he had so little knowledge to help  him move forward.   He did  not have any job skills, any computer skills, any television, four kids he was trying to raise with his girl. The rehab guy from the prison had apparently run off with the  cash that was intended to help the recent men released.

This very friendly individual was trying so very hard to  live correctly--he had so little going for him.  He had absolutely zero social mobility.

Yes, one could  say everything was of his own doing  but  he  had so little to go on when he wanted to live correctly.  The problems  he had were so removed  from this  blogger one  could  not imagine  his struggles.

The words of  John Edwards still  ring true today.

As  Noam and Geraldo and Bernie  suggested the problem is  very much deeper than stop and frisk.  the problem of poverty seems so complex the answer must be  very difficult.

Good  job  to  Noam and Geraldo and Bernie for trying to talk  about the issue and bringing in the opinion and thoughts of the folks of the city.

Thanks for not being afraid..

I Just Love Listening to Joan Hamburg On The Radio......

Joan Hamburg Returns to New York Radio Airwaves

By Richard Horgan
Fans of Joan Hamburg were very unhappy with WOR 710 AM when the station unceremoniously dumped her earlier this year, without the chance to do a farewell show. But after a summer recharging, the veteran radio personality has returned.
JoanHamburgPic
Starting this Saturday at 1 p.m., the 79-year-old “First Lady of New York Radio” will host a two-hour weekly show on WABC 770 AM. From this week’s glorious announcement:
Hamburg will continue discussing the most important social, economic and political issues that impact listeners’ lives each week. Hamburg will also interview major celebrities and powerful political figures on the program.
Hamburg will also produce weekly features and exclusive programs available in digital formats. In addition, The Joan Hamburg Show programs pre-empted by sports play-by-play will be presented on the 77 WABC stream and within other 77 WABC digital products.
“How excited I am to join legendary WABC radio and work with Kim Bryant, Craig Schwalb and the rest of the Cumulus family,” said Hamburg. “And what a treat to join their roster of the best talk talent in the country. New York get ready – the conversation is about to begin.”
At Michael’s this summer, here’s how Hamburg described the WOR parting when she crossed paths with our “Lunch” columnist Diane Clehane:
“I didn’t see it coming,” Hamburg said. “I never in a million years thought this would happen. I’m still trying to process.”
She recalled the events of that day for me like this: “I was getting ready to go on the air when saw someone from human resources and I thought, ‘Someone is sick and they’re going to ask me to go on for them.'” Instead, she was shown the door that day without any warning. While she admits that the station has the right to let anyone go, she calls the decision to deprive listeners of a proper farewell as “despicable” saying “I love my audience and they deserved better.”
This consummate pro respected by all who know her remains optimistic. “I’m the ultimate Pollyanna,” she said with a smile. “For all of us, there is life out there. Every ending is a new beginning.”
Hamburg was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 2012. Welcome back, Joan!

from the ronnie re........

Always listening to talk radio and I have been listening to Geraldo on WABC for over a year now....Recently moving to wichita and looking for good talk radio, Geraldo is really a well done show and hard to beat as he knows the news, the international news, all the big talkers go on his show and most importantly of all......he is not afraid of an opinion different than his.  Then I discovered Curtis and Kuby....hilarious and equally informative.  Now I love Joan Hamburg, as well.  Planning on visiting New York to see Letterman, Joan has all of the tips on the shows and where to eat.  I always listen to Joan now live or on the podcast because I love her friendly voice and she has great information and recipes....she is very interesting, as well.  As far as I can see or hear,  WABC is one of the best talk radio and information stations on the radio today.  I also listen to Larry Mendte on Sunday evenings and he often fills in for Geraldo.  He is an excellent reporter, too.  Now, I do not always agree with Larry but he always researches his facts for the show very well....love to write about him on my blog.    Thank you for your time and best of luck to Joan......the station is lucky to have her.

Please share your thoughts on the radio......agree or disagree.....everyone is welcome.........

Joan Hamburg: The Best New Radio Show--WABC 77 New York

Leave it to WABC 77 New York Radio for the very best listening during the day.....

Always listening to Geraldo and Noam every morning for the latest news, the big political talkers and the best radio information--seriously, Geraldo does the best radio talk news show out there.

Geraldo has the gift of listening to both sides, saying his opinion and making a good show--WABC is lucky to have him.

Challenging anyone to find a better radio show that gives all sides of the latest political view and conduct an interesting show.  The listener is the winner because they have the information.  the defining factor.....Geraldo is not afraid of new information, even if he disagrees--highly unusual in talk radio today.

Follow with the hilarious and again both sides--intelligent radio for the intelligent radio listener...Curtis and Kuby.

But the very best and latest Saturday addition that no one should miss is Joan Hamburg.

This lady has her finger on the pulse of the latest New York information......

Her recipes and restaurant info is to die for........I'm still waiting to make her dressing--crackers and onions and chicken drippings--I'm down for that, Joan.

Please listen to her best interviews show for recipes from the New York Times featuring smothered chicken.

Is there a better value in cooking than a whole chicken....so delicious and so fun to prepare and eat with your family.......

Family people........much to many of my associates dismay......children or dogs and cats......they all like chicken.

Joan interviews Gail Sheey, Harvery Firestein, a very informative stint with a physician describing the death of Joan Rivers...the who what when where why and how......

Love Joan--if you are trying to visit New York to see Letterman--she can tell you where to have a bite to eat and fills one in on the details of the expense account.

I love Joan.......it seems like I am listening to an old friend.....she is perfect for Saturday.....she is also a brilliant radio host.

Wish her the best......

here is a link to the radio station......click on Joan Hamburg and go to the podcast....guaranteed good listening....tell me what you think.

Geraldo Rivera: So Sorry for the Loss of Your Older Brother Willie

Geraldo Rivera, brilliant news talk show host, told us today about the loss of his older brother, Willie.

Geraldo's show on WABC New York Radio 77 from 10 to 12 every week day morning........Geraldo always, always, always has compassion for his guests if he agrees or disagrees with their views--always lets them talk and say their opinion.

Willie passed away this morning from a long fight with heart disease and cancer.

So sorry for your loss, Geraldo, and also to your family and your 95 year old mom--to your radio family, too--may Jesus be with all of you on this sad day.

Appreciate your compassion and interest in people, Geraldo, and the ronnie republic would like to extend our thoughts to you at this sad time.

Noam Laden always does a good job anchoring the radio microphone when the host is not there but the he was later joined by Curtis Sliwa who is usually joined by Ron Kuby for their own show at noon.

Curtis and Noam continued the conversation started be Geraldo before he left a little early today to join his family.  They talked about the police issues in New York City concerning the mayor, the police commissioner  and the issues of safety concerning the citizens and the officers, themselves.

WABC is lucky to have Geraldo Rivera in its stable of news talk show hosts.  He runs an excellent show......always listening to the radio, Geraldo has the ability to run an interesting show, inform the listeners, tell the people the important international and national news of the day and let the people talk.....this is highly unusual in talk radio today.  Geraldo is not afraid of ideas different from his own--Republican or Democrat.

Thanks, Geraldo, for consistently doing a good job and caring about people and their trials and tribulations.

Prayers and thoughts with you on this very hard day.

Dear Larry Mendte: You Might Be Barking Up The Wrong Tree on Ferguson

English: Nancy Grace at her book party for her...

Talking about Ferguson, Missouri and the recent death of Michael Brown.

All the big talkers keep going on about it.

Larry Mendte and Geraldo Rivera--two favorites of The Ronnie Republic--they seem to always have their facts, say what is and is not their opinion, and welcome a conversation of the opposite.

77 WABC New York AM Radio has some good ones--seriously, they are the best radio/news/talk station so far.

Also Curtis and Kuby are hilarious and Joan Hamburg has some real good info on Broadway shows and recipes on Saturday.

Larry is missing the point on the issue of Ferguson and the slaying officer Darren Wilson.  Yes, Larry, we know he followed the law--we get it--as you always say.

But, something just does not seem right........

As Nancy Grace said yesterday on CNN and then on her own show on HLN something just seems wrong with the whole scenario.  Nancy told us she does not feel comfortable with the way the prosecutor used the grand jury and the law.

Nancy Grace mentioned something that seemed strange to The Ronnie Re right off the bat......

Right, Darren Wilson said he was fighting for his life--but look at him--does he seem beat up to you in the photos taken of him at the ER immediately following the incident?

The idea that Michael Brown is a violent character, a bad actor, or a "demon" as Wilson tellingly described him just does not hold water....why....think about it.....what about all of the really violent, hostile mentally ill folks that are picked up every day by the police departments around the world?

What about all of the violent criminals that actually do resist arrest--how do they survive the police encounter and Michael Brown did not.

Regardless of color too many of our youth are dying at the hands of the police and excessive use of force.

Should the laws be changed?

Should the process be changed to protect our kids?

Should the police have  more training?

Should the kids have more training--perhaps in school--how to act when confronted by the police so you will not die.

No--it's a shame--a crying shame to hear the words of the parents of Michael Brown.  Nancy Grace did an excellent job of telling us how the parents felt.  One could not hear it without feeling sympathy for the family and imagining the heart ache they have felt.

No--the thing is not all cut and dried--Nancy Grace did a brilliant job of pointing this out.

Talking about color.......

I doubt seriously this same scenario would have happened to a young man in La Jolla.  Well, okay, Larry--if you say so--it's simply just about the law--really, because I have never heard of it happening in La Jolla--the same scenario.  Oh, right, I guess it's just a coincidence--it happens all the time--we just do not hear about it.

Excessive use of force, lack of experience, drawing his gun too soon, not waiting for back-up--all of these things have been said by the experts on various talk radio and television.

Thank goodness for Ron Kuby--he has pointed out some of the facts to us, also.

Larry is so angry the people are protesting--well, what exactly should they do to protect their rights.

The treatment of the mother after the death--it seemed like it was quite disrespectful--would this have been the treatment of the parent from Rancho Santa Fe?

To The Ronnie Republic one problem might be social mobility.  At the end of the day it is a different life in middle income suburbia than the segregated inner city of Wichita.  Will the kid beat up for gang affiliation have the same opportunities as the kid from La Jolla?  Will the kid surrounded by gang members have the same thoughts as the kid surrounded by classmates headed for Harvard.

Shall I blast Bill O'Reilly here on white privilege--can white kids act up but a giant black kid cannot?

This was the death of a young man on his way to college--perhaps he still lived in two worlds......that of his youth and poor decision making and that of academics, adult hood and good judgement that lies ahead.

At the end of the day shouldn't we try to save our children and examine the situation a little more closely.......it sounds easy to quote the laws and the rules and sum Michael Brown up as a bad actor but shouldn't we examine the larger picture and do some hard thinking about solving the situation at hand.

So today, my man Geraldo Rivera, 77 WABC New York, is departing from his fellow Republicans, as he so often does, to promote the plan of President Obama to go ahead with his plan of immigration reform without the consent of congress.

Geraldo is on WABC every morning from 10-12--he is not afraid to go in a different direction from his other cohorts at Fox News.

Can't wait to see it this evening--he will go up against Bill O'Reilly on The Factor to argue the issue.

Can't help but view Bill O'Reilly as a racist--on many--occasions as he recounts his ideas for policy regarding people of the Religion of Islam and his take on poverty in the African-American community.

I invite Bill here to Wichita and merely witness the lack of grocery stores in the lower income area and hear his take on that--there is simply no access to food in walking distance.  Unbelievable!

San Diego--12 year old boys beat up for gang affiliation in the barrio......Bill, just wondering--what do you call that sich?

Can't start here on Bill O'Reilly and white privilege.......his lack of compassion for his fellow human beings is a completely other subject for deep introspection on a different day.

Geraldo is not afraid to stand up to O'Reilly.  He said the other members of the GOP are really not interested in moving forward on immigration reform.

Geraldo Rivera is not always behind our President but immigration is one of his pet projects and dear to his heart.  He said there are over 500,000 undocumented workers in the New York City area alone.

Geraldo told us the last time him and O'Reilly went off on this subject they almost came to blows--it was heated--and the closest he has ever come to a fight on the air.

These people are here and working hard and want a future just like the rest of us.

Here is a sample of the traditional older hard working Latinos in action in San Diego..........

Take a trip to Rancho Santa Fe and see who is doing all of the manual labor, building brick walls, gardening, etc.  The place could not survive without the Hispanic labor.

And as George Bush said....who is going to pick strawberries....my kids are not going to do that kind of work, are yours.......

The best story is the Mexican guys working on an extremely steep roof, no protection, huge drop off, on Thanksgiving day.  I said.....why are you guys working on Thanksgiving......and they said....my boss--he wants the money.

Geraldo also did a good job on his show recently when he called out San Diego congressman Duncan Hunter on saying 5 members of Isis had come through the Southern Border.  In fact, thanks to Geraldo, it was proven to be a lie without any substantiation of facts behind the statement.

The border in San Diego and the surrounding areas is extremely strong.  Try visiting the border crossing at Jamul....these people are not playing around.  Constantly going through cargo trucks, armed and with dogs, often waiting at the end of the dirt driveways during the night--these people are serious and defy anyone to say they are not.

Thanks, Geraldo and Noam, bringing up the opposite side of the issue, for telling us the facts, but mostly thank you for your compassion towards other human beings around the world.

General Wesley Clark: Seal Team 6 Should Not Be Cashing In......

Wesley Clark speaking01
Wesley Clark speaking01 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
According to General Wesley Clark, today on Geraldo Rivera WABC New York, the members of Seal Team 6 involved in the killing of Osama Bin Laden should not be cashing in on their military experience.

He was very adamant that these individuals speaking out about the activities involved in this very strategic and dangerous mission are giving away our secrets and putting our troops and our country in harms way.

General Clark stated to Geraldo Rivera there are also very many people involved in strategic commands in the Army and other areas of the military that do not talk after important events--he went on to say it was very wrong and he is totally against it.

General Wesley Clark said that Vladamir Putin has invaded the Ukraine and that he feels like he can change international borders at will.  He feels we should give assistance to the Ukraine but not sent troops.

He said this is a very important time in the world today because China, Russia, Iran are all marching toward achieving more strength internationally.

Geraldo Rivera did a good job of asking the former Presidential Candidate questions and getting all of the info without interrupting or becoming angry if he did disagree.

Well done, Geraldo and General Clark, for giving us information of what is gong on in the world today.

Another good show on WABC 77 New York:  Joan Hamburg on Saturdays......and this week she will feature an interview with Vanessa Redgrave.

Thank you for reading....from the ronnie republic radio round-up.
