I Just Love Listening to Joan Hamburg On The Radio......

Joan Hamburg Returns to New York Radio Airwaves

Fans of Joan Hamburg were very unhappy with WOR 710 AM when the station unceremoniously dumped her earlier this year, without the chance to do a farewell show. But after a summer recharging, the veteran radio personality has returned.
JoanHamburgPic
Starting this Saturday at 1 p.m., the 79-year-old “First Lady of New York Radio” will host a two-hour weekly show on WABC 770 AM. From this week’s glorious announcement:
Hamburg will continue discussing the most important social, economic and political issues that impact listeners’ lives each week. Hamburg will also interview major celebrities and powerful political figures on the program.
Hamburg will also produce weekly features and exclusive programs available in digital formats. In addition, The Joan Hamburg Show programs pre-empted by sports play-by-play will be presented on the 77 WABC stream and within other 77 WABC digital products.
“How excited I am to join legendary WABC radio and work with Kim Bryant, Craig Schwalb and the rest of the Cumulus family,” said Hamburg. “And what a treat to join their roster of the best talk talent in the country. New York get ready – the conversation is about to begin.”
At Michael’s this summer, here’s how Hamburg described the WOR parting when she crossed paths with our “Lunch” columnist Diane Clehane:
“I didn’t see it coming,” Hamburg said. “I never in a million years thought this would happen. I’m still trying to process.”
She recalled the events of that day for me like this: “I was getting ready to go on the air when saw someone from human resources and I thought, ‘Someone is sick and they’re going to ask me to go on for them.'” Instead, she was shown the door that day without any warning. While she admits that the station has the right to let anyone go, she calls the decision to deprive listeners of a proper farewell as “despicable” saying “I love my audience and they deserved better.”
This consummate pro respected by all who know her remains optimistic. “I’m the ultimate Pollyanna,” she said with a smile. “For all of us, there is life out there. Every ending is a new beginning.”
Hamburg was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 2012. Welcome back, Joan!

Always listening to talk radio and I have been listening to Geraldo on WABC for over a year now....Recently moving to wichita and looking for good talk radio, Geraldo is really a well done show and hard to beat as he knows the news, the international news, all the big talkers go on his show and most importantly of all......he is not afraid of an opinion different than his.  Then I discovered Curtis and Kuby....hilarious and equally informative.  Now I love Joan Hamburg, as well.  Planning on visiting New York to see Letterman, Joan has all of the tips on the shows and where to eat.  I always listen to Joan now live or on the podcast because I love her friendly voice and she has great information and recipes....she is very interesting, as well.  As far as I can see or hear,  WABC is one of the best talk radio and information stations on the radio today.  I also listen to Larry Mendte on Sunday evenings and he often fills in for Geraldo.  He is an excellent reporter, too.  Now, I do not always agree with Larry but he always researches his facts for the show very well....love to write about him on my blog.    Thank you for your time and best of luck to Joan......the station is lucky to have her.

Please share your thoughts on the radio......agree or disagree.....everyone is welcome.........

Joan Hamburg: The Best New Radio Show--WABC 77 New York

Leave it to WABC 77 New York Radio for the very best listening during the day.....

Always listening to Geraldo and Noam every morning for the latest news, the big political talkers and the best radio information--seriously, Geraldo does the best radio talk news show out there.

Geraldo has the gift of listening to both sides, saying his opinion and making a good show--WABC is lucky to have him.

Challenging anyone to find a better radio show that gives all sides of the latest political view and conduct an interesting show.  The listener is the winner because they have the information.  the defining factor.....Geraldo is not afraid of new information, even if he disagrees--highly unusual in talk radio today.

Follow with the hilarious and again both sides--intelligent radio for the intelligent radio listener...Curtis and Kuby.

But the very best and latest Saturday addition that no one should miss is Joan Hamburg.

This lady has her finger on the pulse of the latest New York information......

Her recipes and restaurant info is to die for........I'm still waiting to make her dressing--crackers and onions and chicken drippings--I'm down for that, Joan.

Please listen to her best interviews show for recipes from the New York Times featuring smothered chicken.

Is there a better value in cooking than a whole chicken....so delicious and so fun to prepare and eat with your family.......

Family people........much to many of my associates dismay......children or dogs and cats......they all like chicken.

Joan interviews Gail Sheey, Harvery Firestein, a very informative stint with a physician describing the death of Joan Rivers...the who what when where why and how......

Love Joan--if you are trying to visit New York to see Letterman--she can tell you where to have a bite to eat and fills one in on the details of the expense account.

I love Joan.......it seems like I am listening to an old friend.....she is perfect for Saturday.....she is also a brilliant radio host.

Wish her the best......

here is a link to the radio station......click on Joan Hamburg and go to the podcast....guaranteed good listening....tell me what you think.

here is a link to Joan's page and I am suggesting the Jan 3rd recap......

Please do not forget Larry Mendte on Sunday evenings...also he often fills in for Geraldo......love listening to Larry because he always does his homework and has his facts....agree of disagree he stands behind his idea......just another talented radio host on WABC

from the ronnie republic radio round-up....thank you for reading...please share  your thoughts about the radio.....

What's up with George Noory--what day did Coast to Coast AM become a proponent for the ultra conservative right wing agenda.....I'm telling At Bell......

Ronnie and the cats....looks like they are sleeping but they are really listening to Joan

Here's Chloe--Chloe always listens to Joan every Sat--Chlo also listens to Howard Stern because he like Maine Coons

I guess Chris Merrill will be on in the night..........

What a low blow to this radio listener........I love Chris Merrill.........his show is good, funny, entertaining and newsworthy--not to mention he includes all different kinds of views from his gang--they seem to get along so well.

I knew something was up when Lynda Martin disappeared without any explanation.

Chris please.....I'm not listening to Rick Roberts in OKC!

Spotlight on Women: Lynda Martin

Morning Anchor at San Diego 6, KOGO News Radio

Published:

Lynda Martin

Lynda Martin

What is your background? I was born in London and grew up in the U.S. While I was a student at New House School of Communication at Syracuse University, I received a phone call from my mother informing me our money was gone (that’s another story) and I would have to drop out of school. I was not willing to quit, so I had to find a way. I got three jobs, made copies from books I borrowed, and was homeless. I chose to make it and not fail.
What did you do after college? I wanted to be a network star, so I set out to find a job with a TV station. I was in Worcester, Mass., at the time. No one would hire me after struggling to put myself through college. I was 22, and I walked into a station wearing a red power suit and my hair up in a bun and said I would work for free. They let me work, and eventually I got paid a bit and then got the midnight to 6 a.m. DJ position. Then I got to try out for a TV station working from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the same time working my midnight job. That lasted for about three weeks until I got hired at the station, and shortly thereafter the anchor job opened and I was able to move into that position.
Was that a good move for you? It was at the time, but then I lost the job and was replaced by a man. So I went to another station, where I was hired immediately and never missed a paycheck.
How did you get to San Diego? In 1999 I came here to start Fox, which at the time was Fox 6 XETV. I have been a TV news anchor/reporter for 13 years and have five Emmy nominations. Three years later I moved on to anchor KSWB five nights a week, until 2005 when that news department shut down. I am still a vacation relief anchor at Fox 6 in addition to my morning anchor job.
Where did you get your drive and determination? I had a fourth-grade teacher who convinced me that I was bright and could do anything I set out to do.
How have others benefited from your leadership? By sharing with others I come in contact with at radio/TV/speaking engagements. I find that my story is an inspiration to others and they learn from my struggles.
How do you give back? I have a brother with autism, so I am very committed to Special Olympics and also to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I have run two marathons and am now a long-distance runner and just did the Low Tide Ride & Stride to benefit Wounded Warriors.
Whom do you most admire? I once interviewed a Holocaust survivor from La Mesa by the name of Eve Gerstle. She is now 98 years old, and I was so impressed with her that I still visit her about once a month. I won my fifth Emmy nomination for that story.
What are your goals for the future? Take my skills to inform and educate others. I have a strong commitment to raising my two sons.
What is your advice to others? Never forget where you come from. You don’t know what is next.

from N'DIGO: Hermene Hartman and Company-Sylvester Cosby and Aquantee Hendricks-Give Us Their Take On Black-ish

Thanks to Hermene, Sylvester and Aquantee for giving us their take on Black-ish

Black-ish. . .

by Hermene Hartman, Sylvester Cosby and Aquantee Hendricks
WE were at the office having a discussion on the new sitcom, “Black-ish” and I realized we were of different generations and had different viewpoints. So we all wrote our interpretations of the program. Based on our “water cooler” conversations, this is a collaborative review.
A new word has been added to the Americano vocabulary - Black-ish. Is it a noun or an adjective? It is yet a new word to be added to the description of Blackness or African “Americanese.” It is, perhaps a contemporary view on race relations. It will explain, defend, and possibly offend depending on who you are and where you are in your status/station of life. The show is certain to be controversial. The new ABC sitcom (Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.) premiere had a viewing audience of more than 11 million in its debut. That’s a hit in TV language.

Black-ish is about a Black suburban family whose patriarch fears his kids are losing touch with their heritage, starring Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Laurence Fishburne and introducing four young actors/actresses. This is not an extension or update on The Cosby Show, who was just an American family that was Black but quite average in its middle class happenings. This is different. Black-ish is a cross generational view of a well to do Black family living in America with a Black consciousness. (Ellis Ross), the mother is of mixed race and is a doctor. She is liberal. The family consists of four children and a live-in granddad.

This is a family you might know. . .

black-ish17
This is a family you might know. The father (Anthony Anderson) is an advertising executive at a white agency. He is up for a promotion in the company; his niche is carved out as the Senior Vice President of the Urban Division, rather than Senior Vice President of the Company. He thought he was to be Senior Vice President of the Company, but not so. How many times have we seen this situation? No matter how hard your efforts, your education, your profitability, your experience, your skill set - you are still marginalized to the “black” spot. His wife gives him the other side, a reality check that says you are Senior Vice President of something and what’s wrong with “Urban Division?” He gets it. But does this mean he can’t aspire to being Senior Vice President of the white company? Does he have to wait and be the VP of Urban first or has he reached his height as “Urban VP?”
Laurence Fishburne is a boomer, an old school gent who probably recalls the civil rights struggle. He’s probably experiencing with his grandchildren situations that he never absorbed or are just simply beyond his grasp. He observes his son’s raising “new school” children.” His grandson attends school with Jewish students. He comes home with friend announcing he wants a bar mitzvah. His white friend calls him “Andy” instead of Andre. Oh well. The father sees this as his son losing his very own culture heritage and calls for an emergency family meeting on cultural values and identity. The son wants to play field hockey as a sport rather than the traditional black male game of basketball. The father agrees to a “bro mitzvah.” Something new.

What is “ish?” . . .

blackish-abc
Blackish raises fundamental questions about social class as black folk achieve upward social mobility. How do you raise kids who never wanted for anything to not forget “our struggle” or where they came from?” And what is black culture? Is it the affluent lifestyles of reality stars? Is it images of the basketball player’s cars and their houses? What happens when rappers go Hollywood? The world has borrowed or taken “Black” culture characteristics. “Sista’s” aren’t the only ones with a big butt and a smile. But everybody borrows from each other. How does Kyane West really fit behind the closed doors in the Kardisian world? The world is a mixture of “ish.”
Black-ish presents an honest discussion on race and culture across generational lines. Change is clear and social progress has been made, but to what degree you might ask. This is a show of melting pot integration and how diversity looks today in our lives. How Blackness looks to the hip hopper is different than how it looks to the millennium or the boomer, is the essence of the first episode. Times have changed. Society has changed. There are a large percentage of 20 something’s who don’t have a clue or appreciate the struggle of some of our black icons. Hopefully “black-ish” will provide nuggets here and there. Blackish will provide history lessons infused with life lessons on who we are, who we have become and how other races perceive us. It also will be interesting to see how we make ourselves adapt into new worlds. Do we allow name changes? Do you allow others to make comments about black images seen on television, in the media and in reality?

Can you be happy and insulted at same time? ? ?

Blackish-Cast-ABC-TV-Show
Black-ish examines a lot of issues that plague the middle/upper class African-Americans, issues that whites are probably not even aware of. How do you make life better for your children and their children without losing a sense of who you are? How do they not feel “the struggle” and still understand what it is to struggle? So many parents never want their children to feel the pain of racism. So much of Black culture has come out of hurt or triumphs from injustices never for their children to experience “racial pain.” So we leave the “ghetto” and move to the suburbs. We put our children in the best schools, that are usually predominately white, and they never know about the troubled environments you left behind. In doing so, you leave one troubled environment for another.
You become “a different kind of Black person” or “ not really Black,” like being Black is terrible and because you are not a stereotype you are an anomaly. You go from Andre to Andy, and instead of being a Senior Vice President of the company you only get the “Urban” Division. The mother’s character’s name is “Rainbow” presents an interesting view, regarding her husband’s promotion. If they didn’t give the position to a Black person you would be upset, and you have the position you are still upset. It’s difficult to be happy and insulted at the same time.
As a young woman contemplating a family, I struggle with how I want to raise my children. I will probably move to the suburbs and have the big back yard for the kids to run around in without the constant sounds of sirens. It is our jobs to preserve our culture. We have to teach our children that they are not anomalies, and to teach people who have only encountered black people on television that we are a great race of people. Where ever we go and what ever we do, it’s always a “struggle” we have to learn how to adapt to this one.
Blackish is comedic with serious overtones and will open a lot of eyes. Already I have heard some say they don’t like it because it establishes new stereotypes or it presents an unrealistic view on Black America. Black-ish is new and it’s forthcoming episodes will probably be controversial. It WILL make us look at ourselves regardless if you’re ages 5 to 80 or white or black.
I look forward to the new episodes this fall season.
