Chris Merrill Interviews Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastellum: KOGO at Night--San Diego Radio KOGO 600

So the guy that does my hair lives in TJ.

Who will do my hair?

While this situation may not be an emergency the threat of closing the border by our so called president donald trump does create an emergency for many of the residents and workers of San Diego.

Many folks live on the other side of the border because the rent is cheaper and more affordable for their personal budget.

Many people go to Tijuana or Ensenada on a regular basis because their family is there.

My dog walker's father goes over to Mexico every week because he sees his family and friends and eats dinner.

donald's amazing lack of sensitivity is hurtful.

Chris Merrill, one of the most refreshing voices on KOGO Radio 600 AM in San Diego will always talk about the situation without ridicule.

We will not always agree on the issues but when the problem is talked about, discussed without anger, both sides given we get a new perspective.  The learn the positive and negative points--what is fueling the outrage.

Listen to Chris Merrill chat with the Mayor of Tijuana, Juan Manuel Gastellum, and hear his view on the possible closure of the San Ysidro Border Crossing, the largest border crossing in the country:

https://www.iheart.com/podcast/139-kogo-at-night-28149809/episode/chris-merrill-trump-visits-border-30797541/

Thanks, Chris , for your thoughtful interview.

Well done!

Question:

Does donald trump even care about the problems that are created in the lives of the residents and the citizens of our country by closing the border or threatening to close the border?

Carl DeMaio and KOGO 600: Lose the Gotcha Mentality

Seriously, Carl DeMaio and KOGO 600 AM News/Talk Radio in San Diego should lose the "gotcha" mentality.  It does not serve anyone well in the long run, Carl, the station or the listeners.

It turned out to be very informative about San Diego Radio, their philosophy and news/talk radio, in general, to follow a recent converstaion on San Diego Radio. org.  This is a blog by Joe Nelson, a San Diego Radio veteran.

Carl DeMaio is on KOGO 600 in San Diego from 3-6 PM weekdays.
it is baby owl season in San Diego--from The Grape Street Dog Park

here is a recap of the conversation...................

I loved Carl when he was with Sully on KOGO because I think he is a gifted radio personality even though we are on different sides of the fence politically. Once Sully left and he was on his own the show is so crazy one-sided ultra right wing with the accent on punishing.

Every time I turn on the radio and hear his voice he is going on about Hillary: how she is going to jail, laughing at her, making fun of her personal traits......why?

It's not a fair show or a news show or a political show when he talks that way, it is just his own hatred of women.

If they want to have a show like that they might as well bring back chip franklin.

KOGO just can't help themselves.

When you have Rush and Hannity as your lead-ins, you tend to pander to those listeners to try and bring them to your show. Dont look for Carl to be fair and balanced. He may be directed by management to "righten up".

Then I must ask this question: Does KOGO want to be known as a station that promotes the bashing of women--because in the long run how will that work out well for the station and for Carl.

Sully may have been a Republican, too, but he was at least conversational, not to mention his work and interest in trying to help the homeless folks in the city. That is a giant problem for San Diego and for the safety of the individuals, as well.

Particularly, when this is someone who ran for mayor of our city--as an elected public figure he would have had to represent all of the people of the city--rich, poor democrat or republican.

Either way, KOGO and Carl DeMaio are a sham....and boring as a radio show.

Chip Franklin bashed women on a daily basis and KOGO and The Reader looked the other way--one has to ask why.

Carl DeMaio has brought the ratings up in his timeslot big time and KOGO has skyrocketed from a 1.5 to a 3.8.

Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes posters here today.

< The Reader looked the other way--one has to ask why>

No one reads the Reader and KLSD was a big failure as was Err Amerika

It is fun to hear both sides of the political conversation--but the sense of glee Carls conveys at the possible demise of Hillary Clinton crosses the line from news or journalism or a political talk show to a one-sided rant and like Hannity and Trump it turns into ugly comments obviously just to get ratings as suggested in the previous comment.

Of all people, like Roger Hedgecock, Carl DeMaio has more to offer that the average talk show host because he really does know something about politics.  There was nothing more interesting than to hear Roger describe how politics work in the city.  Roger and Carl have a unique take on local actions, regardless of their political affiliation, that most folks just do not know, and that is really quite a lucky opportunity for the listeners.

Carl should really rise to the occasion regardless of KOGO's bid for ratings because in the long run KOGO may throw him out like others once the wind changes for some reason that has nothing to do with Carl.

Seriously, it is his own funeral in talk radio--just look at the history for KOGO.  They were very willing to cover up and deny and remove disgusting comments from their podcast in the past.  I know this for a fact because I followed it up.

Talk radio seems to be a very weird world--it does not take too long to figure that out once one focuses on it for just a little bit.  It seems like they were very willing to go along with someone like Dr. Laura until the big sponsors like Motel 6 left--then everything changed.

AS far as Hannity, this is someone particularly not to follow--this man is almost a racist although he works very hard to cover it up.  He stopped saying "taking back America" after President Obama was elected for the second time.  That is a horrible statement and it has also been noted by others. I notice Hannity has started using that phrase again perhaps empowered by donald trump.

Carl should try and take a higher road--he was interesting yesterday and has a very unique position--he has a lot to offer personally and politically.

He can be very funny, too.

If I was Carl or KOGO Hannity would be the last person I would use as a role model.

Our conversation has been so interesting and revealing re:  KOGO and talk radio in San Diego.

I wonder who anonymous is--not only do they seem to have a dog in the fight but it looks like they know everything.

The thing is I love Hillary Clinton and I have been waiting for her forever--of course folks are going to disagree, but why make it personal.

Carl DeMaio on KOGO 600 San Diego: A One Sided Report

I loved Carl when he was with Sully on KOGO because I think he is a gifted radio personality even though we are on different sides of the fence politically.  Once Sully left and he was on his own the show is so crazy one-sided ultra right wing with the accent on punishing.

from the KOGO website:

DeMaio Report. Investigative journalism and inside knowledge with an eye on solutions. The show focuses on the issues that matter most to you.

This false and ridiculous statement appears on KOGO's website--I guess that's true if you are an ultra right-wing nut that hates women and democrats.  I do not really call his show investigative journalism--perhaps he is drinking the same Kool-Aid as Bill O'Reilly.

The DeMaio Report airs on KOGO 600 AM news/talk radio in San Diego weekdays from 3-6 PM.

Sully Sullivan: His Voice Will Be Missed on KOGO Radio in San Diego.......

I am leaving "The Demaio/Sullivan Report" as of today...

So here's some pretty big news and I wanted my friends to be the first to know -

Today is my last day on the afternoon show on NEWSRADIO 600 KOGO from 1-4PM. I made the decision to move out of the show for a number of reasons:
First, I am focusing my media efforts on my 2 national television programs that I do weekdays - The Big Biz Show and Sully's Biz Brew.

Secondly, I am in final development of a new weekend topical news television show that features the best and the brightest in San Diego and puts them in a roundtable environment with a weekly rotating cast of San Diego media types in print, television and radio.

Sully Sullivan's photo.
Additionally my television studios and production company [Jump Television Studios - www.jumpproductiongroup.com] are currently in production and distribution of 4 cable reality shows as well as being the west coast studios for The YOUToo America Television Network and Biz Television Network reaching close to 100 million broadcast homes.

Further, I have reactivated my management consulting practice that focuses on capital formation and surrounding duties including deal structure and negotiation metrics and am currently knee-deep in 3 projects.

Moreover, I wanted to further focus on doing the radio that I am most passionate about and I have been asked to take over the role as Afternoon Business Editor at Newsradio 600 KOGO as well as provide content for the other IHeart Media (formerly ClearChannel) cluster stations in So Cal.

Lastly, I will also be the in-studio fill-in host for KOGO.

You know, I fell into radio almost 20 years and have had a wonderful relationship with KOGO for the better part of the last two decades. I’m really proud of the role I’ve been able to play, and will continue to play, as part of the KOGO family.

The afternoon show obviously takes a lot of time to prepare and host and scaling back my role to makes it much easier to focus on other projects I’m developing.

In the end - this outcome is a great way to continue to be a voice on the most influential talk radio station in the region but also start the next chapter of my career.

THANKS FOR LISTENING.
I used to love listening to you too,

copied from the facebook page of Sully Sullivan..........

Really admired Sully's work in trying to find folks without homes in San Diego a new place to stay........he had some new and innovative ideas and it seemed like he had researched his information well as he had statistics about his ideas working in other cities.

We can admire him for trying to really make an effort to solve this very critical problem in San Diego--he was also very willing to hear opinions from others and their ideas, too, as well as agreement and disagreement.

Good job and well done, Sully, for taking on this very difficult task.

True Detective is Back Tonight! Here's Everything You Need To Know About Season 2

HBO, True Detective
HBO, True DetectiveHBO
Finally, after what feels like years, the flat circle that is time has brought us to another season of HBO's current grittiest drama that does not involve dragons.
Gone is the interrogation room framing device, along with the bromantic duo that is Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, so in some aspects, it's a totally different show. However, strangely, even though everything is different, it all still feels comfortably the same.
Season two of True Detective takes place in Los Angeles, where three detectives are tasked with investigating the murder of a city manager. Rachel McAdams plays Antigone Bezzerides, a tough detective with a screwed up family and a somewhat surprising backstory, while Colin Farrell plays her partner Ray Velcoro, another tough detective with a screwed up family, along with a screwed up sense of how to work out his problems.
Tim Riggins, meanwhile, just wants to ride his bike.
Sorry. Taylor Kitsch, of Friday Night Lights fame, plays Paul Woodrugh, a California highway patrolman who would always rather be patrolling those highways on his motorcycle than be literally anywhere else.
Together, they're attempting to find the killer of the guy who was supposed to be helping businessman Vince Vaughn (this season's main philosophizer so far) close a very expensive land development deal.
One of the biggest changes already this season is just in the number of characters. Season one was all about Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Harrelson), but season two definitely has more of an ensemble feel. There's even a woman in a lead role, working hard to fight sexism and prostitution all at the same time, and McAdams totally kills it. (Seriously, one time she punched us in the face. It wasawesome.)

In fact, all of the acting is exactly as great as you might have expected it to be, given that this is HBO and an A-list cast.
"It's different, the second season, for sure," Colin Farrell told E! News earlier this month. "There's a similarity and a certain tone that the piece has that I think resonated with me as having a tone that was reflective of the tone of the first year and a sensibility that's the same. But the characters are very different, the aesthetic is very different, the pace is very different."
What's not different, however, is that feeling of never wanting to leave your house again after you watch an episode because you're now convinced the whole world is depressing and terrible and that you might get murdered, which is clearly a thing that HBO is going for lately with that Game of Thrones finale (still. not. over. it.). Nobody's really in a good mood at any time on this show, but perhaps that's all a clever strategy to keep you from getting off of your couch so you'll just keep watching TV all day, and if that's the case, it's totally working.
True Detective season two premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on HBO.

from the ronnie republic radio round-up:

Always listening to the radio.........
Seriously, sometimes there is nothing on television and I would rather listen to the radio and sew.

KOGO 600 is always on in my sewing room and one off  the best  shows is Merrill at Night and Kevin Finnerty from Showbiz  Junkies.

Kevin and Merrill are suggesting True Detective.....okay there  has to be a  few  good shows out there  besides the news and  PBS.
A fan of Blacklist and James Spader but the fiction of the thing is  hard to take at times.......Kevin says he is  waiting for the return of True Detective as  it shows a  more realistic side of the police force in LA.
Sounds good to me, Kevin, I  am going to take your advice and give it a  try.

Thanks for your tip--well done and keep  up  the good work.
Kevin Finnerty can be heard on KOGO from 7-9PM each evening with Chris Merrill and he also has  the website ShowBiz Junkies for plenty of TV and movie reviews.
