throughout San Diego County, who Himmel connected with during a long
radio and television career.
The Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation is a recognized 501 ( c ) ( 3 )
non-profit organization, which will support a variety of groups and individuals
in need of assistance. Whether providing for children dealing with illness or
injury, families touched by crime or natural disaster, youth programs in
need of resources, or San Diego’s military community, the Foundation aims
to touch as many neighborhoods as possible. Larry described his mission
as a storyteller and broadcaster as “to make people feel better about the
place they call home”. The Foundation is currently asking for the assistance
of the community to find potential beneficiaries. If you know of a neighbor
in need, you’re encouraged to contact the organization through their website,
www.larryhimmelfoundation.org.

Larry’s media career in San Diego spanned parts of five decades, working
at local radio stations including KGB, KIFM and KFMB-FM. He moved on to
television in the late 1970s, and became a fixture on KFMB-TV until shortly
before the time of his passing in November, 2014. Himmel’s features
reflected his comic style, warm personality, and his love of people with
unique and engaging stories. “Larry was so much more than a guy on
TV, he was everyone’s good neighbor,” said Dave Sniff, Chairman of the
Foundation, KFMB Radio program director, and Larry’s longtime friend
and colleague. “He helped his neighbors feel better through the
stories he told about the community he loved. The Larry Himmel
Neighborhood Foundation extends that unique connection to enable
neighbors to help neighbors.”

Larry’s son, Miles, serves on the Foundation’s board and also works at
KFMB Radio. “I’m so excited about continuing my dad’s legacy here
in the community he loved,” Himmel said. “When my dad was in his
hospital bed, he said to a close friend, ‘There’s so much I’m going to
miss.’ We are doing this for Larry so that he knows his memory lives on.”
