There’s been a bit of a laugh deficit in Wichita since the Loony Bin, the city’s only comedy club, closed 13 months ago.
Now it’s back with a new location, name and mission. Live at 215 Performance Theater opened at 215 N. St. Francis last weekend.
“We want to do more than just comedy,” general manager Jeremy Woolever said. “It’ll enable us to put on any shows possible.”
Fans of stand-up comedy needn’t worry. That style of performance will still be featured most Thursdays through Saturdays. A soft opening this weekend showcases comedians Scott White and Sam Norton. The Chinaman, a performer who’s known for his musical impersonations, will headline next week’s grand opening.
Woolever is one of the holdovers from the club’s 14-year run on East 21st Street. A couple of nearby shootings and the landlord’s reluctance to spruce things up convinced the owners to find a new spot. Live at 215 is part of a chain of comedy clubs in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Little Rock that are owned by partners Jeff Jones and Larry Marks.
“We just figured it was time,” Woolever said. “We needed a different place and face.”
The new club was built in 1910 as the W.H. Gaiser Building, first used for carriages and then automobiles. Exposed brick walls and thick wooden ceiling beams add to the ambience. There’s about 4,500 square feet of space set aside for the club, with more next door planned for office use.
Another part of the appeal was location: It sits right on the border between the Old Town entertainment district and redeveloping downtown, with a 400-space parking lot across the street.
“A lot of good things are happening in this part of town,” Woolever said.
Live at 215 holds 135 seats in its theater, a few fewer than the old location, but also has a 86-seat bar up front where patrons can catch a drink before and after shows, as well as a kitchen capable of cranking out an expanded menu. Live at 215 plans to open for lunch and dinner in a couple of weeks.
Woolever expects the venue to be used for theatrical shows, concerts and private events. He said fans of stand-up comedy have been asking for months when the club would reopen.
That process took six months longer than expected as the owners took pains to make sure the building maintained its historical status. A plan to open last Friday fell through as the necessary inspections could not be completed in time. On Saturday, the doors finally opened despite the fact that all its beverage dispensers weren’t operational.
“We were pouring out Coke by the 2-liter bottles, pouring juice out of bottles,” Woolever said. “I think we did pretty darn well.”
Jones, part of the construction crew covered in dust who’d been laboring on the club the previous day, said he thinks all the work and waiting will pay off.
“We’re looking forward to another good 14 years.”

I went down there this past weekend for the opening show, it's a nice place. But what in the hell were they thinking picking a building that small and that design. We were crammed in there like sardines. They must've had the same designer as the downtown arena. And the design and layout is terrible, it's a long narrow room with the stage at one end. Those are the two things that might make me not want to go back. Also there's one 6 foot wide hallway with a 36 or 40 inch door that leads into the theatre that is both used for patrons exiting the early show and those entering the later show, it's terrible. The bar area up front is really small and there's not nearly enough waiting space for those waiting to get into the late show and then everyone waiting is in way of those trying to get out of the earlier show. I got a 17-year-old that could design that venue better than that. It's almost like they decided we're going to be in old town regardless of whether we can find a suitable location or not.

The Surgeons Dancing to Gin and Juice: Bill O'Reilly is Out of Touch

Making the case that O'Reilly is out of touch and unrealistic:

What I've been trying to figure out forever is what makes the old bird tick.....he is so in love with his own brand of Catholic guilt.....he made a fool of himself over Beyonce....going on endlessly about her vid.....what--were you enjoying it, too, Bill?........

he refused to acknloledge Snoop and the good community work he has done in Long Beach and his football team even after he shook hands with him at the Kennedy Center honors.

He rails on against the internet--which is unrealistic because try getting a job and submitting your resume without the internet these days...or selling a car.

Even if one managed employment they would certainly be expected to use the comp after they got the job.  At my last job---OR Nurse--we did all of out charting on the comp and had to be pretty handy with the thing for x-rays, etc.

He is out of touch and unrealistic......

right he discounts Snoop but what he does not realize is that the surgeons were dancing to Gin and Juice at the end of the case..........

my case in point and as you said and as he has mentioned on his show criticizing ACA......all the surgeons these days are not old rich white men.

hello, Bill, who is cute.....President Obama rocking out with all of those cute girls....the soul Queens last night on PBS.....that is what Bill does not get......well, what do you think.......cl...the ronnie re.

Mondays on Geraldo Radio with Bernie Kerik

Former NYPD Police Commish Bernie Kerik on the radio with Geraldo today.

Actually, Geraldo was not there today and Noam Laden very amply filled in to chat with the big man and Top Cop of New York about life on the street for a police man or woman.

It is always interesting to hear what  Bernie has to say--he does have a way to relate to the average person that is informative and enjoyable.  Seriously, I can understand what he is talking about and I know zip about the police.

He told of a story of people under his direction asking him to join them on Saturdays for breakfast and training on top of the Brooklyn Bridge.   As first, Bernie felt like it might not be appropriate or proper for him to join their company but after giving it some thought he felt like it might be respectful to acknowledge their request.  He ended up joining them and it turned out to be a day of mutual respect and admiration for both sides.  He added, "That was the best thing I could have done to show how I cared about the hard work of the individuals  and unsung heroes who work so hard every day and unnoticed for the NYPD."  Every day they do crazy things and put themselves in harms way for the citizens of New York and the average person does not realize what kind of things they are going through.

My son, fixing coffee, said that guy hates liberals, listening to Fran Tarkenton rail against the AARP.......but I said that even though this is a conservative station and Geraldo is a republican he does have people on from both sides and that is rare in radio today.....usually they are hard core dem or repub one way or the other.

That's the radio show of Geraldo and why I like it....I get to hear both sides and the people feel free to talk so the listener gets a lot of info....and that is my goal.

Trying to see what makes cops tick.....that is way beyond interesting info to me.  it is something I would really like to understand.

Thank you, Bernie, for taking time to tell us about the hard work and caring individuals that work on the police force.  That is great information for all of us to know.

Mondays with the Commish......a regular feature on Geraldo Radio......

WABC New York.....1000--1200 Eastern Time.......yes, it is a good show.

here is a link to the show page......I listen to it or watch the vid on my chromebook:

Noam and Jared filled in for Geraldo today as he is on his secret mission.  Noam and Jared are enjoying their time in Dallas for the play offs.

from the Huff Post: Words of Wisdom from Rev. Al Sharpton about Obama Care

Hating Obama Is Not A Health Care Plan

    Posted: Updated:
    Print Article
    OBAMACARE UNINSURED

If there's one thing I've learned in my time on this earth, it's that people love to talk a good game. Instead of actually taking action or concrete steps to create change, they just talk a lot -- endlessly. A prime example is the relentless attacks against health care reform. Despite the fact that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the law of the land and has even been backed by the Supreme Court, Republicans have attempted to repeal it dozens of times, and they continuously ridicule the plan till this day. But guess what? They have yet to offer an alternative. Instead of attacking a plan that over six million people have signed up for (and counting), why don't they offer some ideas of their own? Here's a thought: they don't have any.
This fall, people will head to the voting booth once again for the midterm elections. It's important for everyone to participate and be involved in the process just as much as they were during the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. You can bet the right-wing will run against the Affordable Care Act -- or as they like to refer to it 'Obamacare'. And I hope they do. Because they will be running against children staying on their parents' insurance until the age of 26. They will be running against people who can no longer be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. They will be running against millions of Americans who finally have the security of knowing that they have health coverage should they need it. I would love to see them run against this reform, and I look forward to everyone's testimonials about how 'Obamacare' has improved their lives. That's what we need to do; together, we must remind everyone of the benefits of this unprecedented legislation.
As for Democrats, they shouldn't run from the president or from the ACA; they should embrace it. Why should they run from an actual solution to a very real problem that has plagued countless Americans? Obtaining affordable health insurance has been a challenge for parents, families and individuals alike. So many Americans have been forced into bankruptcy because of outrageous health care costs, and many others have fallen severely ill or even died because they did not receive the care they needed in time. Many attempted to resolve this crisis in the past, and so many have tried and failed at achieving health care reform. President Obama was actually able to deliver on his promise, and we should be proud to support such progress. It wasn't an easy road to get here by any means, but now that we are here and now that people's lives are literally transforming for the better, we must stand tall for we are on the correct side of history.
Lately, we've been hearing a lot from folks like Ben Carson who want to scream up and down against the pitfalls of 'Obamacare'. But he, like all the other naysayers, have nothing to offer except noise. Where is Carson's plan? Where is the GOP plan? Their deceit and games may work for a bit, but when millions have signed up, and people will start to see the actual results of health care reform soon enough, nobody can hide from the truth -- nobody. Democrats need to realize that this is a law already benefiting real people, and that they were the only ones that came with a plan, plain and simple.
To all those that boldly proclaim 'Obamacare' is some sort of evil which must be eliminated, they need to put up or shut up. In other words, they can offer an alternative that can match the benefits of the ACA, or stay out of the way. As I write this, Americans are eagerly signing up for the program. They are obtaining more information, comparing plans and figuring out what works best for themselves and their families. With all of the glitches that Healthcare.gov experienced in the beginning, it is fully functioning now and Americans know it -- that's why they are visiting the site in droves. So instead of criticizing and trying to repeal something that isn't going away, perhaps Republicans need to just get on board for the benefit of this country's citizens.
And maybe, just maybe, they will realize that hating the President isn't a viable health care plan.
