I'm Mad At CNN And I'm Trying To Watch Al Jazeera.......

Good Luck Trying to Watch Al Jazeera America

Much excitement and fanfare heralded the debut of Al Jazeera America, but you may want to pause before you celebrate the arrival of this new journalistic venture.
See, the launch of the channel is one thing. Actually being able to view it is another. And this story illustrates exactly what’s broken in our nation’s video market.
On Monday, just hours before the new 24-hour news network was set to go live, AT&T announced that its U-verse pay-TV service had dropped the channel from its lineup. So that’s 5 million subscribers who couldn’t tune in.
Time Warner Cable dumped the channel last year when Al Jazeera announced it was buying Current TV. So count out another 12 million subscribers right there.
And Al Jazeera America may be impossible to watch even for those consumers whose cable operators do carry the channel. That’s because some companies are putting Al Jazeera in cable tiers that could add hundreds of dollars to your bill.
But it’s not just cable subscribers who are cut off from the new channel. As part of its deal to get cable and satellite companies to carry the channel, Al Jazeera had to kill its livestream of its Al Jazeera English channel.
Instead of the livestream, we now have a message that reads “The Al Jazeera English livestream is no longer available in the U.S.” Brian Stelter reports in the New York Times that the channel even started to “geo-block the news reports it posts on YouTube.”
Al Jazeera America’s launch and the ongoing bickering between CBS and Time Warner Cableillustrate how mega-media companies wield their power over the content we want to watch. Al Jazeera America is encountering the same reality dozens of independent programmers have faced: If you want to grow your cable audience, you have to forfeit your digital streaming rights.
The Illusion of Choice
This is an era where the illusion of choice has won us over. Sure, there are hundreds of channels at our disposal in a basic cable package, but most people watch only about a dozen of them. And cable TV is a monopolistic business. Most people do not have more than one cable/broadband provider where they live. And those of us using alternatives like Hulu or Netflix are still beholden to those exact same companies for our Internet access.
Meanwhile, ISPs continue to embrace data caps on streaming while looking for ways to ensure that their own content doesn’t count against those limits. The message? Watch to your heart’s content, but watch our stuff. That’s a convenient stance for a company like Comcast, which just so happens to own NBC.
Breaking Bad
It’s time to rein in the cable companies and reclaim our right to access the news and information we need. That’s the goal of the Television Consumer Freedom Act, which was introduced by Sen. John McCain and co-sponsored by Sen. Richard Blumenthal. The bill ensures consumers are offered an a la carte option alongside more flexible bundled-channel packages, allowing us to pay for only the channels we actually want to watch.
If Congress adopts this legislation, it won’t just benefit cable customers looking for some rate relief — it’ll also help online distributors and their cord-cutting customers by breaking up the cozy cable programmer-distributor cabal. Once programmers and cable companies realize their old ways of fleecing the public won’t work anymore, they’ll be more willing to embrace progress in the form of online video competition.
Our Media Choices Should Be Actual Choices
Al Jazeera America is trying to pioneer a new kind of nonprofit, public service-oriented journalism. “With a staff of 900, including 400 newsroom employees,” Brian Stelter writes, “it is one of the most significant investments in television journalism in modern times.”
This makes it all the more troubling that gatekeepers are making decisions about who can access the channel’s content — decisions that could undermine the whole venture. You’d think cable execs would want to see Al Jazeera America succeed, but many of the cable companies have controlling interests in other 24-hour news channels that this new entrant will be competing with.
If we’re going to support and foster independent voices in journalism, we need to push back against broken policies that put up roadblock after roadblock for people trying to access real alternatives. Online, on cable and over the air, we have a long way to go to make space for more diverse media.

Al Jazeera America--Getting It All Together........

David Shuster To Join Al Jazeera America

Former MSNBC anchor David Shuster will be joining Al Jazeera as an anchor, a network source confirms to TVNewser. Shuster will likely anchor in the evenings, although a timeslot has not been confirmed. Shuster’s hire was first noted by Michael Calderone of The Huffington Post.
Shuster has been a regular on radio in Washington DC, and appeared frequently on Current TV after leaving MSNBC in 2010. MSNBC suspended Shuster in April of 2010 when it learned that he taped a pilot for CNN. The pilot never went anywhere, but MSNBC still felt compelled to lock him out until his contract with the network was completed.
At AJAM, Shuster is joining a bevy of TV news veterans, including former CNN anchors Ali Velshiand Soledad O’Brien and former HLN anchor Richelle Carey.
AJAM still does not have a chief executive or a head of programming, two roles that it should probably fill before it launches in a month’s time.

Al Jazeera America, Bringing the World Together With Food and Fabric and Cooking With Alia

I would love for you to write about food and fabric of Palestine and perhaps, travel, too.  Or Iran or anything like that...Egyptian local fabric....that is sooooo interesting to me.   My obsession is sewing and food.  I like to see fabric from all over the world....shirt fabric from Liberty of London is my current favorite.  I will travel to southern Italy soon to find shirting fabric there.

My thing...bringing the world together with food and fabric.  We all are just trying to eat breakfast and get the kids dressed and off to school while we try to get to work on time.  This commonality brings us all together with a daily goal.  I love to write about it on my blog...the ronnie republic....and I welcome any contributors to talk about sewing tips, classes or any good sewing info......It is the SEWING HERALD TRIBUNE portion of the ronnie republic.

That big boy in the picture, that's ronnie...he's my dog and he's really cute...thanks for everything....chloelouise.  PS:  have you seen cooking with alia?  It is a show on you tube about Moroccan cuisine....it is a really good show...you should  have her on the new Al Jazeera...she is a wonderful person and a good cook...her recipes are easy to follow and she has traveling episodes, too.....thanks, again...cl.

Hello,
Can’t wait for Al Jazeera America to launch? Neither can we!
The award-winning Al Jazeera program “The Stream” is coming to Al Jazeera America, and to mark the announcement, we’re hosting an #OpenEditorial Google+ Hangout, this Friday, June 28, at 12pm ET / 9am PT with “The Stream” host Lisa Fletcher.
What can you expect from the Hangout? This isn’t going to be your traditional news broadcast — for starters, we don’t know yet what topics we’re going to cover.
You read that right.
Our #OpenEditorial meeting is your chance to connect with us directly and pitch a story idea for coverage. We want to know which stories you think the national media has missed and need to be covered.
“The Stream” producers and hosts will be tweeting on #OpenEditorial all week, so join the conversation as we discuss your ideas.
We can’t wait to hang out at the Hangout with you!

Al Jazeera America and Ali Velshi--Now That's A Good Combination

Ali Velshi joins Al Jazeera America

New Half-Hour Series Will Focus On The Economy’s Impact On Everyday Americans
NEW YORK – (April 4, 2013) – Al Jazeera America, the new US-based news channel set to launch later this year, today announced that Ali Velshi, CNN’s former chief business correspondent and anchor of “Your Money” and CNN International’s “World Business Today,” has joined Al Jazeera America to develop and host a daily primetime business program.
Based in New York, the as yet-to-be named 30-minute magazine-style program will initially launch in a weekly format but is expected to move to a five-days-a-week schedule by year’s end. The program will cover a variety of topics including employment, personal finance, healthcare and education and will feature a mix of field reports, studio guests and interactive discussions designed to highlight how economic developments in the U.S. and around the globe affect the daily lives of Americans. The program will draw upon the extensive global resources of the Al Jazeera Media Network and will employ specialists and other correspondents who will lend their expertise.
In making the announcement, Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of Al Jazeera international operations, said, “We are thrilled to secure Ali’s extraordinary talents and services. Al Jazeera America will be bringing respected, independent reporting to its viewers and that’s exactly the type of coverage Ali Velshi is known for."
Velshi built his reputation covering breaking news events and politics, as well as global and national issues such as the world financial crisis, the collapse of U.S. financial system and the debt ceiling debate.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Al Jazeera America, an organization that puts quality, fact-based journalism first,” said Velshi. “It’s a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to taking advantage of the extraordinary U.S. news-gathering capabilities the channel is building and working with such a diverse and talented group of colleagues to tell compelling stories that matter to Americans.”
Al Shihabi said that Velshi is exactly the kind of journalist that viewers will be able to find on Al Jazeera America. “As is the case with Ali, all Al Jazeera America reporters will be fiercely objective, substantively strong, and absolutely committed to the truth,” he said.
Al Jazeera America, which will launch in 2013, is the new U.S. news channel that will provide both domestic and international news for American audiences. It will be headquartered in New York City with additional bureaus in key locations across the United States.

Welcoming Al Jazeera America.......

Al Jazeera Opening Detroit, Chicago Bureaus

Al Jazeera America has said that it plans to differentiate itself from the cable news competition by covering stories the others won’t. One way to do that is to have full bureaus in places that the competitors have either a skeleton staff or no one at all.
To that end, the channel says that it will open full bureaus in Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan. The American auto business is still based in Detroit, and that seems to be the impetus behind having a bureau there.
“We want our reporters to be where the stories are and Detroit continues to be where American business stories and trends are happening,” said Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of international operations for Al Jazeera in a statement.
Politico’s Dylan Byers has the full list of bureaus that Al Jazeera America is planning, including New Orleans, Nashville and Seattle.
