Carl DeMaio and KOGO 600: Lose the Gotcha Mentality

Seriously, Carl DeMaio and KOGO 600 AM News/Talk Radio in San Diego should lose the "gotcha" mentality.  It does not serve anyone well in the long run, Carl, the station or the listeners.

It turned out to be very informative about San Diego Radio, their philosophy and news/talk radio, in general, to follow a recent converstaion on San Diego Radio. org.  This is a blog by Joe Nelson, a San Diego Radio veteran.

Carl DeMaio is on KOGO 600 in San Diego from 3-6 PM weekdays.
it is baby owl season in San Diego--from The Grape Street Dog Park

here is a recap of the conversation...................

I loved Carl when he was with Sully on KOGO because I think he is a gifted radio personality even though we are on different sides of the fence politically. Once Sully left and he was on his own the show is so crazy one-sided ultra right wing with the accent on punishing.

Every time I turn on the radio and hear his voice he is going on about Hillary: how she is going to jail, laughing at her, making fun of her personal traits......why?

It's not a fair show or a news show or a political show when he talks that way, it is just his own hatred of women.

If they want to have a show like that they might as well bring back chip franklin.

KOGO just can't help themselves.

When you have Rush and Hannity as your lead-ins, you tend to pander to those listeners to try and bring them to your show. Dont look for Carl to be fair and balanced. He may be directed by management to "righten up".

Then I must ask this question: Does KOGO want to be known as a station that promotes the bashing of women--because in the long run how will that work out well for the station and for Carl.

Sully may have been a Republican, too, but he was at least conversational, not to mention his work and interest in trying to help the homeless folks in the city. That is a giant problem for San Diego and for the safety of the individuals, as well.

Particularly, when this is someone who ran for mayor of our city--as an elected public figure he would have had to represent all of the people of the city--rich, poor democrat or republican.

Either way, KOGO and Carl DeMaio are a sham....and boring as a radio show.

Chip Franklin bashed women on a daily basis and KOGO and The Reader looked the other way--one has to ask why.

Carl DeMaio has brought the ratings up in his timeslot big time and KOGO has skyrocketed from a 1.5 to a 3.8.

Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes posters here today.

< The Reader looked the other way--one has to ask why>

No one reads the Reader and KLSD was a big failure as was Err Amerika

It is fun to hear both sides of the political conversation--but the sense of glee Carls conveys at the possible demise of Hillary Clinton crosses the line from news or journalism or a political talk show to a one-sided rant and like Hannity and Trump it turns into ugly comments obviously just to get ratings as suggested in the previous comment.

Of all people, like Roger Hedgecock, Carl DeMaio has more to offer that the average talk show host because he really does know something about politics.  There was nothing more interesting than to hear Roger describe how politics work in the city.  Roger and Carl have a unique take on local actions, regardless of their political affiliation, that most folks just do not know, and that is really quite a lucky opportunity for the listeners.

Carl should really rise to the occasion regardless of KOGO's bid for ratings because in the long run KOGO may throw him out like others once the wind changes for some reason that has nothing to do with Carl.

Seriously, it is his own funeral in talk radio--just look at the history for KOGO.  They were very willing to cover up and deny and remove disgusting comments from their podcast in the past.  I know this for a fact because I followed it up.

Talk radio seems to be a very weird world--it does not take too long to figure that out once one focuses on it for just a little bit.  It seems like they were very willing to go along with someone like Dr. Laura until the big sponsors like Motel 6 left--then everything changed.

AS far as Hannity, this is someone particularly not to follow--this man is almost a racist although he works very hard to cover it up.  He stopped saying "taking back America" after President Obama was elected for the second time.  That is a horrible statement and it has also been noted by others. I notice Hannity has started using that phrase again perhaps empowered by donald trump.

Carl should try and take a higher road--he was interesting yesterday and has a very unique position--he has a lot to offer personally and politically.

He can be very funny, too.

If I was Carl or KOGO Hannity would be the last person I would use as a role model.

Our conversation has been so interesting and revealing re:  KOGO and talk radio in San Diego.

I wonder who anonymous is--not only do they seem to have a dog in the fight but it looks like they know everything.

The thing is I love Hillary Clinton and I have been waiting for her forever--of course folks are going to disagree, but why make it personal.

Kieth Rowland Talks the Future of @ArtBell51

So news/talk radio does seem to be like a really odd thing.....here in San Diego, no one seemed to mind when we had an ultra-right wing name calling nut on the morning drive forever, particularly the station itself.

Now Merrill, my favorite person in the evening is gone and now Geraldo is gone from WABC.

It does seem like a cut throat world--can't blame Art for wanting control of his own show and radio world but it did feel like it was a bit much to handle from the get go. Who can run the whole end of taking all of the calls every night alone with no break as he often said there was no screener.

That is where Art and Geraldo and Larry King are the best. They can handle anything and they can make anything sound interesting without getting angry and insulting the caller. They are not afraid of the caller--in the long run it makes a good show. They are truly gifted and very intelligent.

Well, we can see why Art wants the control but who can handle everything every night. It is just too much pressure.

Is there anyway Art can come back on an "as needed" basis--what about the way Leo LaPorte works with his own studio--he also was tired of the television network bossing him around.

Perhaps, Art needs a studio he controls with more people but not right at his house and not every night.

Just a thought--it is interesting to hear how the radio world actually works, enjoy your comments.

Short Update from Keith Rowland re: Art Bell

I am saddened of course by the quick departure of Art Bell and many people think this is just a stunt to get out of doing the show. But let me tell you these latest events are real and Nye County police reports have been filed and are public. I’ve been with Art for each of his retirements, and while I may not agree with some of his reasons, they were real and after time he has managed to overcome them and return to radio. This too may pass.
Many people have been thinking this is just a way to get out of the show because it wasn’t doing any good. But, in fact we had contracts in place to bring on 2 more very large stations to the network, of which we were very encouraged about. We were growing every day. Subscriptions were still increasing and stations were still signing up.
However, I doubt he will ever be able to come back to traditional radio again, it was still a hard sell as it was, and stations’ concerns of his longevity certainly played out. If he does come back in any capacity, it would be on DMDN.
The Dark Matter Digital Network will still run the same programs it has been, if they want to stay, and still for FREE. The only change are some programs will not be LIVE, just pre-recorded. We will continue to produce Midnight in the Desert with Heather Wade and have Art back when he can. To support this effort, please stay subscribed as a Time Traveler.

Sad Sad News About Art Bell

Long running? 5 months really isn't that long. And Bell has a long history of quitting and retiring for bizarre reasons. He's good, but also a drama queen.

I am terribly sad about this whole thing......drama queen.....we have heard that said before.

What a loss--a bad day for all of his fans to find out this information.

Honestly, I would say Art is just about one of the most gifted talk show folks out there--he has the unique ability to make every guest sound interesting--really interesting.

I finally figured out it was not the guest it was, in fact, Art Bell and his radio talk show host talent.  he can handle all of the callers without getting angry.

A little surprised because he has said on his website that he would be on 760 here in San Diego in December--good news as I have the radio on all of the time in my room.  It is much easier just to tune in on the radio that get the comp or the i-pad--for me, anyway.

Kept looking for him on 760 on the radio and it was never on the website of 760 and it seemed to disappear from Art's website, too.

Frankly, I had a funny feeling this was going to happen--no I am not psychic, but it is just way too difficult and time consuming to be a one man show.  I felt like writing him and suggesting a helper--why not a show with him and John B. Wells.

Now I am just stuck with that dumb Coast to Coast and I have terrible political issue with George Noory--George is talented also but at the end of the day he just does not have the talent of Art Bell--and he does not pay attention.

Sorry to see Art go--I am really sad and I know all of his fans are really disappointed, too.

Citing Threats, Art Bell Ends Radio Program

Radio host Art Bell suddenly ended his long-running program this weekend, citing alleged threats made against him and his family.
The Pahrump Valley Times reports the 70 year old radio personality called it quits after months of what he has described as "never-ending terrorism."
Bell says shots have been fired outside his residency, and that he has spotted trespassers near his home late at night.
He also says he received a phone call in November saying that if his radio program aired that night, both Bell and his family would be killed.
In December, Bell says he was walking on his property and someone fired shots at him, but police found neither any suspects nor any evidence a gun was fired.
The Nye County Sheriff's Department opened an investigation into the case, but has closed it due to a lack of evidence.

The Strange and Cut Throat World of Talk Radio........

After listening to talk radio and writing about it for a really long time--seeing my favorites disappear without any explanation, and hearing unbelievable comments from crazy hosts without any repercussion whatsoever--I have come to the conclusion that radio must be the weirdest and most cut throat job out there in media land.

chloe louise--the ronnie republic radio round-up,,,,,,,,,any comments or posts are welcome, agree or disagree.

Loved listening to Geraldo Rivera and Noam Laden every day......wishing both of these very talented individuals the best.

Geraldo - Seriously?
You made a hand shake deal with the Tricky-Dickies? What the hell were you thinking? These two guy are the shadiest operators on the planet! Perhaps you have missed all the complaints and backlash over the past few years of the shady deals, the mass firings of great people just to pad the bottom line so they could get their bonus packages!?
What in gods name were you smoking? These two jackrabbits have destroyed countless fabulous careers of some very talented people. What made you think you were immune to their back stabbing nonsense? Are you that special in your own mind? You must have an ego to match those two ass-hats for sure!!
Lew Dickley used to give these awesome speeches about how Cumulus was poised to run Clear Channel or now i-fart media into the ground. He was convinced he could have Cumulus take over the world. He and John are both giant bags of wind. Or, a big puffy cloud. They look and talk big, but have no substance.
Shut your whiny pie hole for just a minute... take what you are feeling right now (you know... betrayed, short sided, lied to, taken advantage of, used, abused, un-appreciated... I could go on) and now... take those feelings and realize that there are literally thousands of people who have been through the same ringer you think you have been singled out for.
You poor soul... getting canned after Thanksgiving. Oh, the tears.
Shut the fuck up. I got canned shortly after Christmas. As did many of my other co-workers. And that 'blood letting' procedure was even after Cumulus so blatantly announced that there would be no more bonuses on rating performances, no contracts, non of it... oh, but they did want to hold folks to non-competes.
You my friend are a total dumbass.
Take your lumps. Shut your hole and deal with it.
We all have

  • Geraldo Rivera Exits WABC/New York Amidst Drama, Acrimony

GERALDO RIVERA told his FACEBOOK followers this weekend that he has been let go at CUMULUS News-Talk WABC-A/NEW YORK, and he blamed new CEO MARY BERNER and NEW YORK VP/Market Manager CHAD LOPEZ for not honoring his handshake agreement with former CUMULUS programming chief JOHN DICKEY.
A post on WEDNESDAY (11/25) said, "To fans of my ‪#‎77WABCradio‬ show this may be goodbye.  I’ve just been informed by Mary.Berner@Cumulus.com the new CUMULUS MEDIA CEO & by Chad.Lopez@Cumulus.com the NEW YORK VP/Market Manager that they do not intend to honor the handshake deal I made with the ousted company chief JOHN DICKEY, an agreement to extend my current contract for a year.  The decision to renege on our deal on the eve of THANKSGIVING is especially upsetting coming in the wake of my emotionally charged and highly rated coverage of the PARIS massacre and frantic efforts by authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.  Last year, the VILLAGE VOICE named me the ‘2014 Best AM Radio Host in NYC’, writing in part, 'GERALDO RIVERA actually has something to say. The guy understands the issues of the day and has enough confidence in his opinions to call bullshit on blowhards,' which I’m doing here."
A subsequent, much longer post on SATURDAY outlined CUMULUS' financial problems, called LEW and JOHN DICKEY "honorable" but "over-extended and prey to hedge funders who gobbled up enough clout to oust them as managers and install someone who had no experience in broadcasting but who apparently impressed those adventurous investors."  He said he was locked out of his studio as of FRIDAY although his contract expires DECEMBER 31st, and threatened to sue CUMULUS, saying that "because of their unforgivable disrespect I will fight them and they will end up costing their battered company far more in damages than they expect to save in my salary."
