Telling Tourists from Wales about San Diego........
there are maps of the bay all over the place |
a very nice and beautiful lady from the information desk gave Ronnie a bowl of water-- she said we just do that for dogs... |

midway--people eating at Fantail Cafe... |
near Grape and Harbor looking towards Broadway and the Midway |
Trying to tell the Welsh About San Diego…….
Where to go, what to eat, what Mexican restaurant to visit and where to get the best margaritas…..
Well, I think the best thing to do would be have dinner at Anthony’s the first evening--walk around the harbor at the foot of Broadway, the next day visit the Midway, have lunch at the Fantail cafe and maybe hit the Carnitas Shack on University Ave. in the afternoon on the way home from the zoo.
Midway Museum and Fantail Cafe on the back of the ship... |
What do you think?
Well my friend said that was all wrong...Right, I know Anthony’s is full of seniors and can have a wait but I still think they have the best view of the harbor and the best fish and chips in town for the price.
Do the Walesers want fish and chips; isn't that already their specialty, anyway?
He said the foot of Broadway is all messed up due to improvements and it is not going to be done any time soon. Why are they doing all of this ugly construction right in the middle of the tourist season?
He took the Hornblower dinner cruise around the harbor and said it was very nice but he has no idea in the world of the price (it must be nice).
Should I tell them about the world famous gay area in Hillcrest and all of the trendy and delicious restaurants in that beautiful neighborhood?
Should I tell them about all of the popular clubs in the beautiful Gaslamp--there are plenty of cafes in that area, too; not to mention the Ballpark--do out-of-towners like baseball?
Our city is so convenient because the downtown is basically right next to the harbor, it’s cool and not miles away like Los Angeles.
Really, everything is right there close at hand, the harbour, the ballpark, the gaslamp, the airport…...and Balboa Park is only about 5 minutes away--basically at the top of the hill.
The historic Santa Fe Train Depot is right across the street from the harbour on Broadway.
Santa Fe Train Depot right on Broadway |
My friend said the best Mexican restaurants are right in Old Town starting with the Old Town Mexican Cafe and right across the street is the Coyote Cafe if one is too busy. But what about Margaritas--I would want to be sure and have a really nice delicious, giant crushed-ice Margarita with plenty of salt on the rim--the really big good ones in a lush, cool garden setting. Everyone at the dog park says the best Mexican food is Casa de Pico in Grossmont Center in La Mesa. I think that may be too far for the basic tourist.
Whatever, I don’t know why everyone isn’t talking about Las Cuatro Milpas in Barrio Logan for actually very authentic Mexican food--and the price is right, too--cash only please and there definitely will be a line out of the door at lunchtime.
My friend said he took the Duck Boat Tour with his sister and they really enjoyed it--why is he doing all of these tourist things?
pick up the seal boat at the Star of India |
Okay--who knows the answers to these tough questions….I parked my car at the north end of Harbour Drive across from the east end of the runway, near the anchor in the middle of the road--where Laurel Street meets Harbour and walked to the Midway. It was hot and exhausting, but plenty of free parking during the day. The view was fantastic, the breeze was cool and there are plenty of things to see--the Star of India, submarines, Hornblower tours, the Midway, construction, tourists speaking every language in the world and, sadly, some people without homes.
the Hornblower dinner cruise is about 115.00.
There are plenty of pedi-cabs for rent--about ten dollars per person--some take credit cards and some do not.

Miguel Martinez charges 10.00 per person--does not take credit cards |
this is Miguel's cab--it looks like a good idea |
ronnie resting on the grass by the midway |
the Fish Market is a Gorgeous restaurant right on the harbor and right next to the Midway and there is a cute little grassy park to rest under shady trees--Ronnie and I had to sit down and rest.
the fish market restaurant--the dog park says it's good |
The parking was not a problem at the north end of Harbor Drive near Grape Street, but as you walk towards Broadway there is very few parking spaces available and they have meters which usually take only quarters. It is about a 20 minute walk along the harbor to Broadway where most the the action resides--the walk is beautiful--it can be really hot or very cool depending on the temp and wind--always be sure to bring a sweater.

The Grape Street Dog Park: The Best Neighborhood in San Diego
Right, I go there just about every day with my Ronnie--Ronnie is that really cute brindly guy with the blue tag. He is an American Staffordshire Terrier Mix from the San Diego Humane Society. I have had him about 5 years and he is the best dog in the whole world.
On a really hot, heat-wave type day the Grape Street is one of the coolest places in San Diego. There is a breeze that comes through Florida Canyon and if you sit in the shade it is very nice.
There are also restrooms and plenty of drinking water for people and dogs.
The Grape Street Dog Park is located at 28th and Grape Street in San Diego, however, it can be confusing getting there because there are so many canyons the street often start and stop. 28th Street at the park is only 2 blocks so it may be best to go down Granada Ave. after checking it out on Google Maps.
Grape Street is also part of Balboa Park and the Balboa Park Trails. The Balboa Park Trails can be a lovely walk right past the Balboa Park Municipal Golf Course and there are plenty of cute coffee shops to stop at for a bite to eat.
On the trails the dogs have to be on a leash but not at the dog park--there are no fences.
A word of warning--in certain times of the year, starting in May, there can be rattlesnakes in the off trail areas of San Diego and I have also heard the story way too often of coyotes snatching little dogs, on their leash, right out of the park in early morning and early evening and in the night.
The large building in the background is Balboa Naval Regional Medical Center and Balboa Park and the Zoo are right behind that.
Some of these pictures were actually taken about 2 years ago but everything is basically the same. I hope everyone can come to San Diego and visit this beautiful area, enjoy the dog park and walk around and see the beautiful old houses. There are also owls in the Eucalyptus Trees with babies in the month of May.

Eat to Beat Knee Osteoarthritis and Other Aching Joints
6 Natural Ways to Ease Symptoms of Arthritis
By Catherine Winters, Special to Lifescript
Published November 08, 2012
Medications provide proven arthritis pain relief. But natural remedies are also as close and convenient as your supermarket. The newest studies show the keys to beating knee osteoarthritis and other painful joints may be through your stomach. From fatty fish to tart cherries, here are the right foods and supplements to ease arthritis pain...
Good news for those of us who have osteoarthritis and like to eat: The latest osteoarthritis studies suggest certain foods and vitamins, many found in Mediterranean diets, may ease knee osteoarthritis, keep the condition from worsening, or help stop it in the first place.
There’s a huge drive “to find natural approaches to treating medical conditions like osteoarthritis,” says Timothy McAlindon, M.D., chief of rheumatology at Tufts Medical Center in Cambridge, Mass.
In fact, this research is so cutting-edge, experts say, they’re still working on official guidelines.
“The real challenge is to have information that says how much people should take,” says John Hardin, M.D., chief scientific officer for the Arthritis Foundation.
Research is ongoing but here’s the latest on vitamins, like C and K, and super-foods such as fish and cherries that may provide arthritis pain relief:

Research is ongoing but here’s the latest on vitamins, like C and K, and super-foods such as fish and cherries that may provide arthritis pain relief:
1. Mediterranean foodsPeople in Greece and Italy eat lots of fruits and vegetables, with an emphasis on lean meat, fish, whole grains and olive oil.
It’s a diet that promotes a healthy weight and greater joint health, studies show.
Women with arthritis who learned to cook Mediterranean-style – and ate more produce, beans and olive oil – had less pain and morning stiffness after six months than those who didn’t make those dietary changes, according to a 2007 Scottish study.
A clear cause-and-effect hasn’t been found, but one reason may be that this diet is brimming with antioxidants – including vitamin C – and omega-3 fatty acids, both of which have been associated with an improvement in symptoms of arthritis.
Plus, people who follow the Mediterranean diet tend to lose weight, which eases arthritis discomfort.
With each pound you gain, the overall force across your knee increases by 2-3 pounds; shedding pounds has the opposite effect.
Heavy people who lost just 5% of their body weight lowered their risk for knee osteoarthritis by 5%, according to a 2010 study by the University of North Carolina’s Thurston Arthritis Research Center in Chapel Hill. - See more at: http://www.lifescript.com/health/centers/osteoarthritis/articles/eat_to_beat_knee_osteoarthritis_and_other_aching_joints.aspx?_page=2#sthash.cIYjRCc7.dpuf
What to do: Check out the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, which recommends basing meals on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, beans, nuts, legumes, seeds, herbs and spices; eating fish or seafood at least twice per week; moderate portions of yogurt, cheese and eggs; eating meats and sweets less often; drinking water instead of soda or artificially sweetened beverages; and having a glass of wine a day.
To get started, try these 10 Mouth-Watering Mediterranean Recipes.
Where to find it: Shop in your supermarket’s produce and seafood sections as well as the outer aisles, which usually stock whole meats and dairy instead of processed foods and starches.
2. Selenium This trace mineral helps antioxidants clear out cell-damaging free radicals. In fact, your toenails are loaded with it. Without selenium, new studies show, you run a greater risk of hip and knee osteoarthritis.
Researchers have been measuring levels of selenium in the nail beds of nearly 1,000 people – average age 59 – for the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project at UNC’s Thurston Arthritis Research Center in Chapel Hill.
The study is ongoing, but so far it’s shown that “people who have low selenium levels are more likely to have knee osteoarthritis,” says rheumatologist Joanne M. Jordan, M.D., the center’s director.
What’s more, knee osteoarthritis is more likely to affect both legs and be more severe, she adds. - See more at: http://www.lifescript.com/health/centers/osteoarthritis/articles/eat_to_beat_knee_osteoarthritis_and_other_aching_joints.aspx?_page=3#sthash.3kNznV1w.dpuf

CNN's Strombo is Brilliant: The Watcher is the Winner
It has to be said.....
CNN's George Strombo is the best interviewer on television today. He's good, as in amazing and brilliant and the show format is good, too.
The result: plenty of information--sometimes inspirational information.
The people on his show, the guests seem to have a gusto--a zip in their conversation that one just does not see that often on television today. Frankly, is is not only refreshing but really enjoyable.
George gives the viewer the feeling he is actually excited to hear what the guest has to say--I feel like he is genuine. Strombo has the rare gift and foresight to not make the show about himself--the television watcher is the winner.
As a constant news watcher and radio listener I am personally really glad CNN put this show back on the air. I look forward to watching it every Friday night, now, if I am familiar with the guest or not--and I'll tell you what--I have enjoyed it every single time and I have learned a lot, too.
The exciting news tonight--Tavis Smiley will be starting a radio talk show........
I can always find a new take on things after Tavis talks. In his early years he was inspired to try to help people and make a statement after his dear friend was killed--shot in the back 21 times in self-defense by the police. He also shared how he tried very hard to put Harrison Ford at ease when he could see that he was really stressed about his impending interview. Tavis and George love radio talk shows and I do, too. I can't wait to hear your new show, Tavis.
Kevin Smith gave a very moving interview talking about his parents and his family that he loves very much. He has so much to say it is easy to see how he can show emotions and make movies. He talked about following his dreams and he inspired me to try and do the same thing, as well.
Maria Bello shared her story about starting out in an acting career and almost giving up at one point. Now she feels so grateful that she has achieved success in her career she wants to do something good with her notoriety by helping women in Haiti.
Thank you George--good job, as usual--I really like your show.
(why is this show good? one gets the impression the truth is being told...the truth is always energizing)

Crocheted Oval Rag Rug
Crocheted Oval Rag Rug
materials: king sheet set from Anna's Linens cut into approx. one inch strips
Size J crochet hook
directions for a round rug: Start with an eight stitch ring.
1st row--2 single crochets in each stitch.
2nd row--2 single crochets in every other stitch.
3rd row--2 single crochets in every 3rd stitch.
4th row--2 single crochets in every 4th stitch.
As the rug gets larger this may have to be adjusted as it may get wavy.
It is a very forgiving item to make, particularly if it is loose.....I never go back.....just keep adjusting as you go and it will be fine in the end.
do you know how to make a square or oblong rug.......can you tell us the directions.
