Music Review: The Rolling Stones - From the Vault: The Marquee - Live in 1971

Music Review: The Rolling StonesFrom the Vault: The Marquee - Live in 1971(DVD/CD Edition)

By , Contributor

Right from the intro of “Live With Me,” it’s clear this show is going to be an indispensable rock and roll artifact. The Rolling Stones' From the Vault series of classic concerts videos has been an undeniable treasure chest for fans of the band and classic rock in general. The Marquee - Live in 1971 offers a small club performance taped for TV broadcast in the U.S., but unused until now. The March '71 performance preceded the release of the Stones’Sticky Fingers album by a few weeks. Four tracks from that classic ("Brown Sugar," "Dead Flowers," "I Got the Blues," "Bitch") were given their live debut at this show at London's Marquee Club. Make no mistake, if you love the Stones then this isn't hyperbole: The Marquee - Live in 1971 is unmissable.

One of the things that makes this such an awesome performance is the small-club vibe. Everything feels scaled back, with the band concentrating on musicianship more than showmanship. This is especially true of guitarist Mick Taylor, who seems more focused than ever on delivering inventive, fluid lines. Mick Jagger swills booze onstage, but manages to somehow remain in control of the proceedings. As seen in the bonus alternate takes (two each of "I Got the Blues" and "Bitch"), he's concerned about getting things just right. With only eight songs in the set, this isn't a lengthy show. But with the exception of a slightly perfunctory "Satisfaction," the energy and inspiration is high. Sax great Bobby Keys is particularly on fire, with an especially muscular solo on "I Got the Blues."

The bonus cuts wind up adding about 25 minutes to the running time. It's great to hear the extra Marquee performances, with Jagger pushing his voice to the breaking point on the extra takes of "I Got the Blues." There's also aTop of the Pops performance of "Brown Sugar." The best extra of all is that Eagle Rock Entertainment has included the entire performance as a live album. It takes a certain time commitment to re-watch a concert video, so having the music on CD is a convenient way to revisit the performance while on the go. The CD even has the four extra takes.

The question is not whether to pick up From the Vault: The Marquee - Live in 1971, it's which configuration to choose. Eagle Rock has issued the set in these combos: Blu-ray/CD, DVD/CD, and DVD/LP. Keep in mind the benefit of Blu-ray is limited to audio, which is presented in lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1. The concert was filmed on standard definition video of a much more technically primitive era. For review purposes, I screened the standard DVD edition and the surround sound mix is punchy. It's worth noting there doesn't seem to be much difference between the BD and DVD, price-wise.

Seriously, Actually, at the end of the day.........Bill O'Reilly vs Snoop Dog

Bill O'Reilly would like to be the big dog in town, but Snoop has that position now
Seriously, Actually, at the end of the day.........

Seriously, there is something wrong with Bill O'Reilly.

As an O'Reilly critic I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with the man for a long time.  His idea of picking and choosing facts to highlight his point of view and calling it the news is simply amazing.

Actually, the words of Zeke Emanuel calling him out for using his podium to spread fear rather than give out information regarding the ACA and President Obama is an accurate statement.

A personal favorite is the Kennedy Center Honors where he actually shook hands with Snoop yet ignored the opportunity to make a relationship with someone who knew the inner city and could have enlightened him on events and situations where O'Reilly likes to give his opinion but has no firsthand information.  He also goes on about Beyonce to an embarrassing degree but refused to acknowledge Snoops community work with his football team in Long Beach.  Snoop has spoken often about responsibility--he has had great conversations with Larry King--someone who is actually interested information.

Also, the comments of Joan Walsh on his interview with President Obama on Superbowl Sunday were quite enlightening and thoughtful.  Her comment and insight were helpful to those who found his in-the-face approach to a conversation with a sitting President offensive.

At the end of the day it seems like Bill must have been mistreated as a child in some way that he cannot handle compassion for other people.  Groups of people do not want to forget their history.  They want to cherish their history and try to understand it.  His hatred for Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are telling when so many find the words of these individuals soothing.  The Reverend recently won the Essence award for community work.

Well--what do you think--why is he so popular--who are these folks he always claims to be looking out for?

Where I worked the surgeons were dancing to Gin and Juice--that's what Bill does not get.

Snoop is main stream--it is the regular work a day citizen that voted for President Obama.

Bill wants to convince us all into subscribing to  his view of Catholic guilt-ridden religion and save the world.

Right, then we can all be successful and angry like him.

It is not just a political view......it is an arrogance and lack of of compassion.

Here is a story in Salon about the misrepresentations he has portrayed in Killing Jesus

Blogging the newsbusters by chloe louise...this is a tough group

only a minute to argue before Perry Mason but I will do my best......
talking about Bill O'Reilly.........he is a bully

Like BO and his recent word of the day all of you busters are so obtuse.
Talking about the civil rights movement of the 60's and the Reverend Al Sharpton.
Agree with him or not, this individual really has something to be happy about now, but there is still work to do. Why can't Bill acknowledge his happiness for once for a job well done...no BO continually marginalizes this idea by calling Al Sharpton a thug when he attended the state dinner for the President of France--the name of which Bill could not even pronounce---the H is silent.
Bill is jealous and spiteful because he has been left out and the Rev has been included.
Let him be happy for the reverend instead of calling him names and laughing at him...constantly. There is the devil at work right there if you want to go into it--trying to steal some one's happiness.
Let Bill grow up......Eddie needs to be counseled again by Wally--again, he has the mentality of a teenager
Now, I will be taking Ronald to the dog park after Perry and I do not want anyone to say anything mean about my group.....me, ronnie, Al, Geraldo, Pres. Obama, Hillary, the cats, the dems....until I can get back and defend myself.

Why Chris Matthews is wrong and Chloe Louise is right....Chris Christie wins it easily over Rand Paul

Right, I watch Chris Matthew’s Hardball on MSNBC each and every day.  Love Chris but this time he has got it wrong--except for his name, that is.

He is predicting Rand Paul for the presidential nominee of the republican party.....

Chris, sorry about this one but you are dead wrong.

Chris Christie, republican rock star, will easily be the chosen one to bring his party out of darkness--out of the walking dead of negativity headed by fox new and the ROWG branch of the GOP--which Rand Paul is, indeed, a part of and now embarrassed about his position.

Chris, it’s already over and done with.....

Chris Christie already proved it....Rand Paul tried to go to battle with the great fighter, lost and has tried to beg forgiveness.  Christie won the ground over his statement about libertarianism with the comment focused on Rand Paul.

Rand Paul can’t keep up.  Chris Christie did not need to try and get together with loser Paul and like confrontations will continue.

Christie can fight without being ugly.

He has the back of the citizens of New Jersey and he will show he also has the back of the working class citizens of the United States.

He has that certain something--the Christie Swagger--Rand Paul comes off as little, afraid and whining, just like his fox news cohorts.  That is a bad choice of a gang to hang-out with.  That will bring him down.

Chris Christie has already ditched the limbaugh sinking ship of fools of the republican party.

Chris Christie has a certain panache--he rolls with the big boys--talking about President Obama being the biggest boy of all.

He won the race with his passion on Sandy and he will ride home on a clean finish--the tea-partiers will be crying in the wind as they are left behind.

My only fear and hope at the same time--Chris Christie will be much harder to beat for my girl Hillary Clinton but the race will be great.

See you there Chris Mathews--I love you but you are wrong on this one--Chloe Louise is right.

chloe louise...Hillary girl forever.

You're wrong because you're thinking like a Democrat whilst trying to predict how Republicans will vote. You have to think like a Republican to know how Republicans will vote.
You guys thought that Huntsman was the best Republican candidate ever, even though he barely got any support at all among Republicans.
The same will happen with Chris Christie.

Your dog is pretty. Actually, you are absolutely right--I hate to admit it. I was so sure that Huntsman would take off--he was the only sensible choice. Romney was a disaster--he was so weak; he would have had a fighting chance if he would have just stuck to his original plans--he just kept getting weaker and weaker. Then the next question is what is wrong with republicans? Who are the voters? What is the make up of the voters and the US? Who won the election. Even the tea-party-est of the GOP must realize they have to change if they want to win. The crazy rush-ite era is over for the republican party--even they have to know that--if they can count--that is. Strength is attractive--with dogs and politicians--that is why Christie will win the nomination. The repubs have got to think it through this time. Christie is a breath of fresh air from the O'Reilly haters.
